Fine, thick, thin or afro, even the bounciest of hair types can sometimes feel like they lack a bit of ‘oompfh’. Some causes are just down to hair type – your hair is heavy and thick and so flattens your roots, or it’s fine or a bit thin. Or, it can be down to maintenance – there’s a build up of product, or you’ve been heavy handed with the hair oil again. Sometimes, you’ve got a mixture of both to blame.

We enlisted the wisdom of multiple award-winning hair stylist and Tweak’d ambassador Domenic Iannuzzi, who agrees that volume is often lacking, no matter what your hair texture: “All hair types including thicker hair can lack volume, especially in the crown area.” Luckily, even for hair that naturally lacks volume, there are techniques and products to inject some height and body. And no, we don’t mean furious backcombing a la emo kids circa 2006.

So why do most hair types lack volume? Domenic continues: “Grease is often the main culprit when it comes to flat hair. A combination of natural oils that your hair produces throughout the day along with dirt and pollution will weigh down and dull your hair. If I had to suggest one thing it would be to cleanse your scalp regularly, using a volumising scrub to remove oils and impurities.” We love the Rhassoul Rise & Shine Cleansing Volumizing Scrub, which Domenic says “provides a deep yet delicate cleanse, gently removing impurities and build-up while boosting the volume of your hair right from the root.”

“Using volume-specific shampoos, conditioners and styling products together is key to achieving the best results”

He makes it clear that volumising starts from the moment you step in the shower: “A perfect voluminous style starts by using the right shampoo”, but he also warns against skipping the conditioner: “What’s the point of a voluminous style if your hair looks like a big heap of dry hay?” He recommends “conditioning the hair from mid hair shaft to the tips – usually where it is mostly needed – being sure to rinse out thoroughly.”

Domenic also advises to be targeted with your styling products: “Using volume-specific shampoos, conditioners and styling products together is key to achieving the best results when looking for fuller, thicker lasting volume.” This is where hair sets come into their own, as you’ll find they address your specific hair concern throughout your washing and styling products. The Taya Coco Water Hydrating Volume Haircare Collection is perfect for dry or coarse hair that lacks volume (and the packaging will look gorgeous in your bathroom), or for fine, flyaway hair try Philip Kingsley’s Triple Volume Collection.

Incorporating a volumising styling product couldn’t be easier. Domenic says: “Before starting the drying process apply a volume-boosting styling product to damp hair, working it in from the back of the hair to the front”. This will make sure most of the product is at the crown – where volume is most lacking – and you end up with a smaller amount of product dispersed evenly and more sparingly to the front. Try Tweak’d Dhatelo Restore Conditioning Thickening Foam or Percy & Reed Bouncy Volumising Mousse for serious build, or Taya Copaiba Resin Advanced Volumising Builder and Philip Kingsley Maximizer are good spray options. “It will provide structure and support for any lift you manually create near the roots when you dry your hair, helping your style last all day – or even several days.”

When drying your hair, make sure you lift hair up from the root to encourage volume. Domenic’s time-saving tip for this is to “flip your head upside down! The reason this works is because upside down, your roots are automatically lifting off your scalp, which is how you want them to dry. I like to use this method to get the hair to about 90 percent dry, then do the final smoothing with a round brush – though if you have a fringe, always dry right side up first!”

Finally, enlist the help of a finishing spray. Again choose a product designed to add volume such as Color Wow Style on Steroids Texture & Finishing Spray, which gives your hair a serious boost when sprayed at the roots, or Living Proof PhD Body Builder Hairspray which has a customisable nozzle that you can turn to adjust to the amount of volume you want. It acts as your volumiser and a hairspray, and is a great pick-me-up if you find your style has gone a bit flat during the day.

These days most of us have heard of mindfulness. Referenced as maintaining your focus on the thoughts and sensations in the present moment, rather than thinking about the past or imagining the future, mindfulness is on the lips of many millennials. So much so, Apple named apps centred on self-care as the biggest app trend of 2018. We reckon it’s no fad though, because making time to pay attention to the moment you’re in can really boost your enjoyment of daily life, and help you look and feel more radiant too.

According to a recent University of Bristol study, participants who practiced mindfulness showed a reduction in anxiety and negative thought patterns, an improved resiliency to stress and better emotional wellbeing too. Well, what’s not to love about that? But like anything, knowing something is good for us and actually doing it can be two very different things – in our time-pressed society, it’s often best to find small changes to make, meaning we can more easily introduce these helpful effects into our day-to-day lives.

Yoga teacher and mindfulness expert Rebecca Foster knows a thing or two about the topic. She describes yoga as “a tool to anchor herself to the present moment.” And she takes that stance of being present with her outside the studio too.

“Mindfulness got me through one of the hardest periods of my life,” Rebecca told us. “I started practicing when I broke up with an ex and I felt like I needed to reconnect with myself. Now I find the more mindful I am, the more I appreciate the smaller things in life, instead of being wrapped up in the issues that I can’t do anything about at that time.”

After practicing yoga and mindfulness for a few years, Rebecca decided to train to become a professional yoga teacher. “I thought I’d really like to share the experience I’d had with at least one other person,” she told us. “For me, mindfulness helps to cultivate beauty from within – I sleep better, my skin glows, and it positively affects how I feel about my appearance. I want others to feel that too.”

It seems we can all benefit from a little mindfulness, and if you’re a beginner, it’s best to start small. We asked Rebecca’s for her tips on how we can easily introduce mindfulness into our day-today lives.

Boost your beauty ritual

From focusing on the soothing feeling of your morning shower, to really enjoying the scents and sensations of your products, your beauty routine is made for mindfulness. Plus, you’ll probably enjoy it all the more.

Switch off auto-pilot

Every now and again, try using your least dominant hand for basic tasks like drinking, opening doors and picking things up. This means you’re less likely to let your mind drift on to other things, as you’ll focus more on what you’re doing in that moment.

Eat meals mindfully

If you tend to jump straight onto Instagram when you’re eating, try to kick the habit. Chew your food slowly and focus on savouring the taste instead – especially if you’ve spent time preparing a delicious meal for yourself.

Write a gratitude journal

It’s easy to take the good things for granted. By writing down each day something you’re grateful for – however small – it can help you appreciate life more.

Do yoga (and keep it up!)

Yoga is essentially guided meditation, helping you really keep your focus on the present moment and calming even the most active of minds. Generally, the more you do it, the better you’ll become at being mindful.

Make mindfulness a habit

Start by doing something mindful that isn’t too difficult to incorporate into your routine. That could be meditating, stretching or simply brushing your hair. Then pick a time each day you do it and stick with it. After three weeks your mindfulness technique will become a good habit that’s hard to stop.

Forgive yourself

If you’re forgetting to be mindful or your thoughts keep wandering, don’t be hard on yourself. This is the start of a new moment, so you can begin again right now. Instant forgiveness is key to mindfulness. And practice makes perfect.

Made famous by Kim Kardashian’s hair stylist Chris Appleton, glass hair is all about immense, intense shine.

When he first showcased the look on his Instagram, he said in the caption that his inspiration was ’90s swishy glass hair’. Since then it’s been seen on the likes of Dua Lipa and Olivia Culpo, and the trend shows no signs of abating any time soon.

The look started off with a razor-sharp cut complementing the glassy shine of the trend. But it was this amazing glossy finish that really captured the beauty world’s imagination, and achieving glass hair became all about that mirror-like shine, no matter what your hair length.

Eczema might be a skin condition associated with childhood but of the 15 million sufferers in the UK, 1 in 12 are now adults. Also known as atopic dermatitis, eczema is defined by the NHS as “a condition that causes the skin to become itchy, red, dry and cracked.”

As eczema sufferers know all too well, aesthetically it can be confidence-kicking. Beyond that, dry and scaly skin can feel extremely comfortable while the urge to scratch is both infuriating and sleep-disrupting.

The cause of eczema is unknown but it has been linked to genetics (it often runs in families) and environmental factors (people with eczema also often have allergies). Triggers vary from person to person but can include weather, stress, hormones, diet and irritating products. Sadly there is no magic ‘cure’ but merely methods for managing flare ups.

In recognition of National Eczema Week, we enlisted some expert help to give us some practical advice on the best ways to manage ezcema…

Forget foam and fragrance

Stripping back your skin, body and hair care routine is a must, and products that foam or are heavily fragranced are the first to go. “Avoid common foaming skin irritants such as anionic detergents and surfactants, particularly SLS,” GP Dr Roger Henderson recommends. “Instead wash your body with emollient-rich shower gels or bath oils and use a gentle fragrance-free cleanser for your face,” Consultant Dermatologist and author of The Skincare Bible Dr Anjali Mahto adds.

Make best friends with your moisturiser

Dr Henderson highlights how moisturising is an essential element of managing eczema: “Apply a rich cream generously and regularly even when skin doesn’t feel particularly dry.” After washing, moisturising becomes even more important. “Using emollients immediately after a bath or shower will help to trap moisture in the skin. Remember to pat your skin dry (not rub) before applying,” he adds.

Avoid extreme temperatures

Annoyingly, both ends of the spectrum can cause issues. “Heat is a problem for eczema and sweat contains traces of certain chemicals that can further irritate the skin,” Dr Henderson explains. “Keep showers short and cool and if you do get sweaty, rinse off and change as soon as possible. Use light cotton sheets and keep the room as cool as possible,” he suggests. During the colder months moisturising becomes even more important. Dr Mahto adds: “Winter can be tricky too with the combination of dry air and central heating”.

Swap your laundry detergent

Many mainstream laundry detergents contain irritating ingredients that could aggravate eczema. It’s not worth the risk so switch to a sensitive skin friendly formula such as Surcare.

Get moving

“Stress hormones affect the body’s immune system which impacts on skin inflammatory changes,” Dr Henderson highlights. Yoga and pilates can prove a godsend in this department. “Low-impact workouts can help with stress, energy levels and the immune system without too much skin-irritating sweat,” he adds.

Go for a mani

Acrylic nails can be a legitimate game-changer. They don’t stop the scratching per se, but the smoother nail means the damage caused is significantly reduced.
