Keeping calm and carrying on

Hello,

Hope you are all hanging on out there in these difficult times. We had a family funeral yesterday – my lovely father-in-law died a few weeks ago. We were privileged to be there with him at the hospital when he passed away in February, and yesterday we said our goodbyes at a funeral which was very different to the one we had planned, a small affair and with no hugs or handshakes. It made a sad day even sadder – what strange days these are.

I will dwell on it no longer here though – at QVC we are trying to keep things as normal as possible for as long as we can, with the help of stringent health and hygiene measures, and I am so grateful for my friends and colleagues and everyone’s “the show must go on” attitude which is brightening our days at work. I hope we can make your days a little brighter too, and give you a little respite from everything that is going on, for now at least.

I am still taking refuge in running, even though of course the race I have been training for has now, like everything else, been postponed. Getting out into the hills for fresh air and exercise (no people; social distancing TICK!) is such a great comfort. My garden too is providing comfort, and instead of socialising over the next however long, I can hopefully get out there and continue to whip it into shape!

The lawn needs some attention and our QVC gardening guru Richard Jackson is launching a Today’s Special Value offer on Sunday which has come at the perfect time. His Weed, Feed and Moss Killer is a one-application treatment to feed the grass and kill moss and common weeds like dandelions, white clover and creeping buttercup, all at the same time. The 5kg tub will treat a lawn of up to 250 square meters, and the ideal time to use the product is between April and early September, so I can’t wait to get started! Just need a dry day…

Looking ahead to next week, another Today’s Special Value offer to draw your attention to. On Tuesday 24th it’s a pair of straight leg trousers from Mr Max which come in short, regular and (hurray from me!) tall options and five colours: blue, black, ivory, light grey and lilac. These are a real wardrobe staple.

I hope you can continue to join us as we continue to bring you our live programmes and, we hope, to entertain and distract you a little. We appreciate your support so much – stay safe.

Much love

Jackie xx

  1. Hi Jackie,
I’m so sorry to hear about your father in law passing away. How sad for you both but even more difficult that you have to go through a funeral at the minute in a way you didn’t plan. It’s absolutely devastating how many families are going through the same thing and on the opposite side of things how many weddings have had to be cancelled. I don’t think many of us can get our heads around what is happening and how many jobs lost and industries devastated. We’re only 2 paychecks away from being homeless so I really worry for so many families and individuals. I worry for the nhs staff also, which affects your husband too. Keep well and take care x

    1. Thanks so much Susan and yes, horribly worrying times. Everything has changed almost overnight and it’s hard to deal with. You take care too, big (virtual!) hugs.

  8. Hi Jackie, so sorry to hear of the passing of your father-in-law, it’s never easy when this happens. It’s always good when you have the support of people around you. Your garden looks lovely. Mine is still suffering the aftermath of Storms Ciara and Dennis, the latter managed to destroy a fence panel. Thankfully that is now repaired and I no longer have the world and it’s mother stopping to look into the garden, or maybe they were just admiring my QVC plants lol. Like yourself I have had to curtail my social activity. I’m a ten pin bowler and bowl in a league here in Gloucester and the league has been suspended as has a couple of tournaments until further notice. I watched your garden show this morning with David from Hayloft, you two are so funny when you do the garden shows together. Stay safe and take care x

    1. Margaret you live quite near me then! I’m so grateful to be able to get out into the Gloucestershire countryside and get some fresh air away from people at the moment. And very glad you got your fence fixed! Hope you get back to your bowling soon. Yes that David is a character isn’t he…all good fun! Take care of yourself.

  9. So sorry to hear about your recent bereavement, at least he will not have to deal with the devastation the UK is currently going through, however it’s a terribly sad time for your husband and your entire family, my condolences to all of you. Thank you to you and your colleagues for keeping things as normal as is possible given the current problems, may I ask that all of you be careful. I know we must carry on as best we can so it’s nice to have some respite. Take care, keep safe, thank your husband and the NHS.

    1. Thank you so much Denise. We are being very careful at QVC and hoping to keep going as long as possible. I will indeed pass on your kind thoughts to my husband. Take care.
