This month for our Sleep Better series, we’re looking at ways to keep cool in bed during the summer months. Although the weather is up and down at the minute (where did this rain come from?), we’re sure those delightful sunny spells we’ve had recently have got you looking forward to more sunshine-filled days. But of course with warmer days, come warmer nights too.
So how can we help prevent overheating? The right summer bedding is a good place to start.
If you’re still going to sleep in the summer under the same high-tog duvet you’ve used all winter or on sheets made from a heavy material, you’re bound to wake up tossing and turning. Instead, opt for lighter and more breathable bedding that will help to keep you cool throughout a warm and humid night. We have a range of excellent options in our summer bedding collection, take a look at some of our top picks below and sleep comfortably whatever the temperature.
Pillows
Chances are when it comes to thinking of cooling bedtime options, a pillow isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. However, they can do much more than help to keep you in a comfortable sleeping position. This Coolsense Pillow from Sealy not only offers excellent medium-to-firm support, but thanks to a ventilated foam filling and cotton-like DuPont Cotrano case, it also works to prevent overheating as you rest your head.
Bed linen
Is there anything better than slipping into cool, crisp sheets at the end of the day? Material is key here and cotton has long been a popular choice for summer as it is soft, light and breathable – perfect for the warmer months. We’re loving this Cotton Cool & Crisp Four-Piece Duvet Set from Northern Nights as an option, as well as the matching fitted sheets with Truegrip technology. All made from 100% cotton, they’re deigned to feel luxurious and cool against your skin. Bonus – they come in three colours to choose from, including a chic Pistachio green that is very on-trend.
Duvet
Is your duvet already feeling too hot and heavy now we’re out of winter? It’s likely because it’s too high a tog. The tog rating of a duvet is how warm it will keep you and ideally in the summer, you’re going to want something on the lower end of the scale. We’re a fan of this Supreme Comfort Cotton Duvet from Slumberland which has a tog of 10.5. This isn’t the lowest you can go, but it means it will also be well suited to the transitional seasons and has the benefit of a breathable cotton cover to help you feel cool.
Base
As well as providing support to the whole body, mattresses are often packed with amazing technical features that aim at giving you the best night’s sleep possible, including temperature regulating. The Quantum Edge 1500 Springs Geltex Pillowtop Mattress from Sealy is no different. It boasts an abundance of beneficial features and the one that jumps out for summer, is its Geltex layer. The open cell structure of this layer is designed to create greater breathability, working to help you maintain a constant temperature throughout the night.
If you’re not ready to invest in a new mattress, a good alternative is to go for a mattress topper like this Comfort Control Temperature Regulating Topper from Silentnight. It has a soft microfibre cover that’s been treated with Silentnight’s Opti-Therm technology – an innovative technology designed to react to the temperature of your body. When you’re warm, it works to absorb body to heat and keep you cool, or when it’s exposed to colder temperatures, it will trap the heat between your body and the fabric to help keep you toasty. Genius!
We hope you find your perfect solution for sleeping well in the heat. Don’t forget, we’ve got plenty more options in our summer bedding collection to take a look at, as well as a variety of gorgeous new patterned duvet sets to brighten up any bedroom too!
Sleep well.
