Cosy knitwear for autumn

Although we’re still getting the odd warm sunny spell, there’s no denying that autumn has now settled across the UK. Green leaves are turning golden, spiced lattes are returning to menus and blustery days are becoming more abundant. This shifting in the seasons inevitably means a shift in our wardrobes too and one of the first things to turn to (and a favourite for many!) is cosy knitwear.

Wonderfully warming, there’s something delightfully comforting about slipping on a soft jumper or wrapping yourself in a chunky cardigan when there’s a chilly spell in the air. So, as we open our arms to autumn, make sure you’ve got this season’s staple in the bag with the help of our inviting knitwear selection. There’s plenty to pick from, but here’s a taster of what we’re loving right now.

The stripy jumper

It can be an easy default to turn to plain dark colours in autumn, but by injecting brighter colours and patterns into your wardrobe you can keep things fresh and playful. There’s no pattern quite as versatile as a stripe and a design like this Sandra jumper from Monsoon, with its vibrant striped print and blouson sleeves, will go with a wide variety of autumn looks. Try it with jeans for a casual yet chic outfit ideal for daily outings, simply slipping a jacket (or raincoat!) over it when needed.

The lightweight cardigan

Autumn can be a confusing time when it comes to dressing for the weather. You wake up to a crisp, cold morning but by midday the sun is beaming down and is seems like summer has come calling again. This is where a trusty lightweight cardigan comes in handy. It offers breathable cover when it’s warm but can also be worn as an extra layer under coats on chilly days. One we’ve got our eye on is this fine knit cardigan from Kim & Co, which comes in a wonderful autumnal Cognac colour.

The comfy jumper

What about those cold days and evenings where all you want to do is snuggle up at home with a book and a cuppa? A good jumper is a must! You know, those ones that feel like they’re giving you a warm hug, like the gorgeous Fairisle jumper from Badgley Mischka. It’s an incredibly cosy design, with a mock neckline and long sleeves. Coming in a classic Cream or Grey, it’s one you’ll be wearing well into winter.

The intarsia knit

Intarsia is a knitting technique that involves adding multiple colours to your knitting. It’s most often used to incorporate pictures or patterns and can result in some incredibly playful (not to mention detailed!) images on knitwear. One design that makes use of this technique is this charming long-sleeve jumper from Joules. Featuring an adorable dog intarsia design you can’t help but love, it’s the perfect way to celebrate our furry friends and look good while doing it.

The wear-with-anything jumper

Last up, every autumn wardrobe needs a staple jumper that goes with everything and is easy to dress up or down. Often a plain block colour design works best for this, but subtle prints will too. A great example is this soft Olivia jumper from White Stuff, which comes in a classic Navy or on-trend Mulberry. Its loose-fitting design means it can be worn with jeans, leggings or trousers, while by simply adding a statement necklace, it can be made more glamorous in a flash.
