Outfit ideas for Mother of the Bride

It’s happening, they’re all grown up, the big day is pinned down in the diary and now it’s time to decide what to wear! As the Mother of the Bride (or Groom) there can be added pressure to stand out or look a certain way, but our advice is to try not to think about everyone else and instead focus on choosing something you personally feel great in. Don’t disregard comfort either… it’s often a long day after all!

To help get you started we’ve pulled together a few outfit ideas for you below.

The jumpsuit

You might be thinking… an unusual one to start off with, but jumpsuits for weddings are all the rage this season, tapping into our new-found love of comfy clothing. They’re incredibly versatile too so can be easily dressed up or down to suit the occasion, which means you’re likely to get more wear out of one!

We think this short-sleeve jumpsuit from Kim & Co looks fabulous for a wedding styled with metallic heels or wedge sandals and to glam it up even more, simply add a matching metallic clutch bag and a pair of dazzling earrings like this diamond vintage-style pair.

The printed dress

From sensational spots to eye-catching abstract, you’ll see prints at most weddings and with so many different types to choose from, it’s no wonder why! Whether you prefer to go big, bold and bright or prefer subtler and more toned-down designs, there really is a print for everyone.

For fans of florals, the Odetta dress from Masai Copenhagen is definitely one to consider. It comes in a gorgeous Pink Azalea option and as you can imagine, features the flowers in abundance in a beautiful large print. Another floral option is from new-to-QVC brand, Finery, in the form of a delightful ditsy print dress ideal for those preferring a smaller all-over print.

If you want to move away from florals but still adore an eye-catching print, then Monsoon’s Angeline dress is sure to impress. It features an abstract arrow-print that’s modern and fresh, plus comes in a stunning on-trend green colour that’ll work just as well in autumn and winter as it does now. Style it with sandals or brogues if you’d prefer to wear flats or a pair of strappy heels.

The lace number

You can’t go wrong with lace for a wedding! It looks effortlessly romantic, with a classic, feminine appearance that lends itself perfectly to the more formal dress styles. Sleeveless and short sleeve lace dresses work especially well this time of year when the weather is likely to be warmer.

This maxi dress from Isaac Mizrahi Live is a truly beautiful design that will flatter all shapes thanks to its fit and flare style. The gorgeous all-over lace effect gives it a wonderfully elegant feel and we just love the delicate hemline. Try pairing the Wild Rose option with metallic or white court shoes and a bag either in a matching shade or a popping contrasting colour like the Amanda Wakeley Deneuve crossbody-bag in Lipstick.

If the day looks like it’s going to be a breezy one or if you’d prefer added coverage for your arms, you can always add a shrug or bolero like this linen-look bolero from Kim & Co, which can be tied up at the front for a more formal finish.

The tailored look

Of course, you don’t have to go for an all-in-one option. We’re seeing more and more tailored trouser suits and skirt-and-top combinations, especially as there’s more of a pull to towards picking versatile outfits that can be worn more than once. If you’re going for a tailored look then Helene Berman’s fashion range is a good place to start, boasting a host of elegant blazers, trousers and coats.

Although it’s not always the done thing to wear top-to-toe white to a wedding, if you’ve got the okay from the bride then a white trouser suit can be a nice nod to you being a key part of the bridal party. Something like this white tweed jacket teamed with white cigarette trousers and heels will look smart and pulled-together. You can always add a pop of colour with a contrasting top and if you really want to go with the theme, then choose one in a colour that matches the bridesmaid dresses!
