As the autumnal days begin to roll in, it’s easy to be unsure about what to wear. Summer clothes still hang in the wardrobe, but there’s a breeze that puts you off wearing your favourite sundress. This is where transitional fashion comes in, and we’re revisiting five summer fashion staples, styling them to suit the changing season.

Jeans

While jeans are a year-round staple, light-wash denim and white jeans can fall out of favour in exchange for indigo and black as the year goes on. Yet, with brown, tan, cream, grey and white all looking fabulous against lighter denim, there are a lot of options on hand to carry your favourite pair through autumn. A cream jumper will look great with white jeans for a tonal ensemble that oozes sophistication, while a tan jacket paired with light blue jeans and a white vest top will give a laid-back look that’s still put together.

Shirt

A timeless staple in any wardrobe, the humble white shirt is an easy piece to carry over into autumn. It sits beautifully under a jumper with a statement necklace to add an extra touch of glam, can be tucked into slim-fit trousers and teamed with a pair of boots, or accessorised with a scarf to keep you warm if things get a little chilly. A well-fitting shirt will also be key in your evening wardrobe. For drinks with friends or a nice dinner, try a shirt worn over black jeans, and add your favourite heels and a biker jacket for good measure. This’ll be a great option for staying stylish and warm during the early days of autumn.

Maxi dress

Everyone loves a maxi dress, but tend to make them redundant as soon as the kids are back to school. However, pairing a maxi with your winter knitwear can create a look that’s both stylish and functional. A jumper with a slightly shorter length will not only keep you feeling cosy, but will accentuate your waist at it’s narrowest point. If you’re a big cardigan fan, try an over-sized style belted at the middle to create the same hourglass effect. Why not bring your summer accessories into the mix too? A wide-brimmed hat will top off this look beautifully, channelling that boho vibe that never goes out of style.

Denim jacket

That’s right – a lightweight denim jacket is not just for summer. With clever layering, this warm-weather essential can be integrated into your repertoire for cloudier days. On mornings where simplicity is key, try a denim jacket over a fine-knit jumper or a long-sleeved top and add a big scarf if it feels needed. Weather looking set to change? Try a layered look incorporating your denim jacket can be a great way to prepare for all eventualities. For an ensemble that looks fresh off the A/W catwalk, try layering an over-sized shirt with a white T-shirt and add your jacket on top. For chilly days, you could also add a coat over your denim jacket. Uber chic and great for cold mornings.

Sandals

So you’re not wearing a flirty sundress with gladiator sandals, but that doesn’t mean you cant get a few more weeks of wear out of your summer shoes! Trade the skirts for your jeans and throw on a 3/4 length-sleeved top and you’re good to go, or pair with a layered midi dress look for that “last days of summer” feel (although not recommended on a rainy day… wet toes? No thanks!)

Is your wardrobe overwhelming you with too many clothes, but not enough outfits? Sounds like you need a capsule wardrobe!

What is a capsule wardrobe?

The concept is simple. A capsule wardrobe is a curated collection of clothing designed to make choosing an outfit easier. The tops all go with the bottoms, and you have shoes for every occasion. Add in some one-off pieces and you’re good to go. Some people like to set an item limit on their capsule wardrobe but the key is, try to focus on separating from the clothing that you love to wear from the impulse buys and panic “it’s in the sale” purchases.

How to start your capsule wardrobe

Let’s take it in phases.

Phase one – the clear out

Everyone dreads the wardrobe clear out. It always seems like a good idea until you’re halfway in, clothes are everywhere, and you don’t want to sort anymore. But it’ll be worth it – because you need to see what it is you’re working with.

As you sort, be on the hunt for the timeless, versatile pieces that you wear repeatedly. There’s no reason to get rid of your favourite jazzy maxi dress if that’s your go-to summer staple, but look carefully at the clothing that was bought for one occasion and never worn again. Is it something you definitely want to keep? Great! Think of ways to work it into your rotation so it gets more wear. If not, send it to the charity shop/sell it online/ ive it away to a waiting friend!

Phase two – find the exceptions

There are, of course, some exceptions within a capsule wardrobe. These include seasonal wear, specialised workwear, eveningwear and exercise clothing. You may only wear your snow boots once a year, but if you need them, you need them. This isn’t about going without. Same can be said for special occasion outfits, if you feel fabulous in that cocktail dress, keep it! Store these items away for now. They don’t need to clutter the wardrobe but have them somewhere where you can get to them easily.

Phase three – assess what you have and what you need

After you’ve seen everything in your wardrobe, now it’s time to get a little ruthless. If you have ten pairs of jeans, and only wear two of them, you don’t need ten pairs of jeans; get rid of eight or them. Have a good old try on too. Look at how things fit you. Are you comfortable? Do you like how it looks on you? Would you enjoy wearing this piece out and about? If the answer is no, it’s time to say goodbye!

Once you have your scaled down collection, it’s time to see which of the wear-with-anything staple pieces your wardrobe is missing. Is there a well-fitting white T-shirt, a classic blazer, a midi skirt, the perfect blue jeans? These are all versatile styles that will make the backbone of your capsule wardrobe. Make a list of the things you think your collection will benefit from, aiming for pieces that can go with more than one outfit. Remember to only have things that are flattering and fit you really well. The goal is to have a grab-and-go selection of clothing that’ll not only make you look amazing but feel fabulous too.

Once you have your list, it’s time to move onto the final phase…

Phase four – start shopping!

The most exciting part by far. Stick to your list, and don’t settle for clothing that doesn’t leave you feeling confident. There’s plenty of options out there, so try things out. The first shirt you try may not be the one that makes you strut down the street, but there will be one out there that does.

What’s coming up at QVC? – more summer fashion!

Howdy folks! Firstly, I’d like to thank everyone from our loyal QVC community, along with all you newcomers, for the very warm welcome and the overwhelmingly positive reaction to last month’s looks. The calendar now reads July (gosh, can you believe it?!) and a new month calls for more enticing fashion.

So, in true QVC style, we’re kicking things off with another fabulous fashion event this coming Friday, where I had the pleasure of styling lovely presenters Catherine (@catherinehuntleytv) and Chloe (@chloeverton1).

For this fashion editorial, I wanted to capture Catherine’s playful vintage vibe and Chloe’s carefree rock ‘n’ roll essence. You’ll find there are two underlying colour themes. With Catherine, I played around with block colours and contrasts, where with Chloe, I focused more on neutral colours and textures to enhance those personal finishing touches. The running thread for both of our leading ladies is animal print, because let’s face it, it’s fun and here to stay!

For me, fashion should feel like a second skin and the focus should essentially be on you first, outfit second, rather than the other way around. This can be achieved simply by choosing a colour or a print that evokes a positive emotion in you, which in return will allow your personality to shine through.

I hope these looks leave you feeling uplifted and inspired, I certainly had a lot of fun putting them together and seeing them come to life on Catherine and Chloe. Full speed ahead, enjoy responsibly!

Hello! I’m Stine – pronounced Steena – (@stinestylistqvc on Instagram) and I’m the new Presenter Stylist here at QVC, aka, the new girl in the class. Well… not quite. I’ve been working as a stylist in fashion and television since moving to London eight years ago and have actually been with QVC for over three years now! During this time, I’ve styled our lovely models for countless fashion shows, in addition to working on various fashion shoots for the TV and the web. You may have caught a glimpse of my latest contribution, as I styled the 2020 Spring Fashion campaign. With a background in personal styling and a life-long obsession with trends, I’ll be going behind the scenes of our bustling studios with the wonderful presenters here at the Q. Oh, and in case you’re wondering where my name is from, it’s Danish… very common where I’m from, believe it or not! What’s coming up at QVCSummer Fashion In celebration of our 48-hour high summer fashion event this coming Friday and Saturday (and my first Stories post, of course!), I’ve had the pleasure of curating four themed looks for two of our fab presenters – Katy (@katypullinger) and Alex (@alexkramertv). I hope you’ll join me on this fashion mini-break. Fasten your seat belts and get ready for take-off… Look one – le shirt c’est chic For Katy’s first look, I went for a contemporary, cool vibe with carefully selected pieces to create an effortless yet sophisticated silhouette. The key item for this look is the WynneLayers curved hem tunic shirt, which is a true wardrobe hero, perfect for dressing up your favourite pair of jeans or trousers. For a day of working from home or a socially-distanced coffee with a friend, I’ve gone for the Phase Eight Luna linen crop trousers. The whole outfit is tied together beautifully with the must-have Helene Berman double-breasted check blazer. For those perfect finishing touches, I’ve gone for these Sam Edelman Loraine Kenya leather loafers (hot new brand alert!), the Radley Foster Lane small zip top cross-body bag and for jewellery I’ve used the Escape by Melissa Odabash hoop earrings, Butler & Wilson pearl and chain two-row necklace and the Lola Rose Nikki Loves Kim semi-precious bracelet. Look two – back to the 70’s For Katy’s second look, I went back in time (to the 70’s, to be more precise!) with this dreamy Ronni Nicole sleeveless button front shirt dress, which will be so easy to wear at any occasion this summer. I’ve dressed it down for a picnic in the park with this Ruth Langsford twill jacket, Lulu Guinness  Cassidy straw basket and the Escape by Melissa Odabash hoop earrings again – this time I’ve opted for the silver option to complement the silver hardware of the jacket. To finish this look, I’d suggest the fabulous Lulu Guinness Lupin suede heeled espadrilles! Look one – suit ‘n’ shorts For Alex’s first look, I went for a chic daytime ‘nothing but neutrals’ vibe by layering this uber-versatile WynneLayers over-sized blazer over a Ruth Langsford Essentials vest and the Joules Cruise longer length chino shorts. With such a streamlined outfit, you only need a few statement pieces to complete the look. I’ve gone for these Frank Usher resin link earrings, this Radley Asher Way medium open top crook bag, and let’s not forget the Moda in Pelle Larya slingback shoes. The overall effect is played-down, yet dramatic. All you need now is a cocktail in your hand and your favourite record on! Look two – sophisticated safari For Alex’s second look, I went for a classic Kim & Co Brazil Jersey short sleeve jumpsuit in a fun yet timeless print, dressed up for a socially-distanced barbeque with friends, perhaps? To add texture and a touch of glamour, I’ve completed the look by styling with easy-to-wear metallic accessories: the Frank Usher disc collar necklace, a Butler & Wilson woven textured tote bag and the Moda in Pelle Riviera Block Sandals. Now, who’s ready for a G&T? Hope you’ve enjoyed this fashionable mini-break with me (and perhaps treated yourself to something nice?) What pieces will you be wearing this summer? Let me know in the comments below. I’ll be back with more of our presenter team to share my current go-to looks, sneak peaks from well-known names and a look behind the scenes. Plus, I’ll be catching up with some familiar faces to find out all the gossip about their fashion favourites. If you have any burning styling questions or outfits you’d like to see, I’d love to hear from you! Can’t wait to get your hands on more presenter style? Head over to my Instagram where you’ll find even more fashion inspo. Take care and stay safe out there. Your trusted stylist, Stine x
