You spend half your life in a menstrual or menopausal cycle that you know little about. FEWE is here to change the conversation and demystify what is going on with your body during this time, so you can see how powerful your cycle really is. We caught up with guest, Izzy Provatos, to find out more about this innovative brand…

How did the brand get started and what inspired the name FEWE?

The last few years have seen a really positive increase in female wellness brands, tackling everything from incontinence to cycle care. It’s a really exciting space and we wanted to be a part of it as it aligned so strongly with our passions.

We saw a real opportunity for a range of products that supported women throughout their cycles, from puberty and menstruation through to menopause. The name FEWE literally stands for FEmale WEllness, and that’s what we are; a wellness brand for women, founded and led by women.

Tell us about FEWE formulas

Our products are formulated with our consumers in mind, and are enriched with botanical extracts like turmeric, lavender and rosemary. Additionally, products like Don’t Cramp My Style Oil are fortified with science-backed essential nutrients to help support your overall wellbeing.

For example, we include Vitamin A which contributes to the maintenance of normal skin and a normal functioning immune system. Zinc contributes to normal cognitive function, the maintenance of normal bones, hair, skin and nails as well as contributing to the maintenance of normal testosterone levels in the blood. Magnesium contributes to a reduction of tiredness, fatigue and maintain a normal energy-yielding metabolism. It’s important for us to use these kinds of ingredients to ensure our products are truly efficacious.

What are your hero products that put you on the map?

The Vulva Serum is definitely a hero product of ours. While there are many products to support the symptoms of menopause, there is perhaps still a bit of nervousness around launching products quite as intimate as this one. We haven’t shied away from it. While it may be a relatively novel kind of intimate care, it has such a clear use with such a tangible benefit that it’s one of the bestselling, most asked about and most reviewed products.

Calm Balm is another hero product because of its range of benefits and uses. We have women of all ages using this one throughout menstruation through to menopause. It’s a fantastic multi-purpose product and is purposely a very convenient size so you can carry it about with you discreetly.

The kits are just brilliant too. While each product individually has its own unique use and purpose, combining them together for targeted support is what we find our consumers really benefit from.

There are between 40-70 symptoms of menopause and every woman’s journey is different. Some may struggle particularly with sleep, while for others it may be mood fluctuations. Having a couple of products in your arsenal to target these things specifically, whenever they strike, can really make a difference. The kits also make great gifts; we often have women purchasing for their daughters as they reach puberty and similarly younger women purchasing for their mothers, another great indicator for the improvement in education around menopause.

Silentnight is one of the most beloved brands stocked at QVC, offering a considered edit of bedding, mattresses, furniture and accessories all designed to help you sleep better.

We sat down with Hannah Shore, Sleep Knowledge and Research Manager, to find out how sleep changes in menopause, along with top tips to support your sleep using some of these superb Silentnight products.

All about hormones

The menstrual cycle comes to an end due to a change in hormones. Throughout the menstrual cycle, there is a regulation of hormones defined by the changes in two particular hormones; Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH). These in turn effect the production of steroid hormones oestrogen and progesterone. The beginning of the menstrual cycle sees a slight rise in FSH which causes ovarian follicles to enlarge and produce oestrogen levels to rise through the first half of the cycle called the Follicular Phase.

When oestrogen levels come to a peak this prompts the second half of the 28 day cycle, called the Luteal Phase. The increase in oestrogen instigates a reduction of FSH and a sudden release of LH which prompts oestrogen to decline in production and sees progesterone as the dominant hormone throughout these days.

During the menopause we see significant changes in these hormones. The onset of menopause sees the ovaries become less responsive to FSH with a decrease in the stimulation of ovarian follicles. This in turn reduces the amount of oestrogen that is produced. As there is a lack of oestrogen it means the body continues to produce FSH so we see increased levels of FSH and decreased levels of oestrogen throughout the menopause.

Along with the reduction in oestrogen and FSH we also see progesterone gradually decreasing in production with age. It is suggested that these changes in hormones cannot just have physiological effects on the body, the menopause also sees an increase of psychological issues such as depression and sociocultural factors such as religion, financial anxiety and the future.

How these hormones affect sleep

Oestrogen

Oestrogen can directly affect sleep architecture, the amount of time we spend in each different stage of sleep. Oestrogen has a direct impact on REM sleep, lighter sleep which is responsible for learning, memory consolidation and emotional processing. A reduction of oestrogen can cause people to find it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Progesterone

Progesterone helps to regulate our core body temperature. Temperature is important when it comes to sleep, in order to get access to that good quality sleep we need, our core body temperature needs to drop by a couple of degrees. It has also been suggested that progesterone is related to NREM sleep, a deeper stage of sleep which is responsible for repairing the body and flushing out any build up of toxins from the previous day. Therefore dysregulation of progesterone can cause spikes in core body temperature and a lighter more fractured sleeping pattern.

Tips for a better night’s sleep

We are not going to stop menopause from happening, the dysregulation of hormones and their effect will still happen, however we may be able to deal with some of the side effects which reduce our sleep. The main area we should focus on is temperature control. Around 75% of menopausal women will suffer from vasomotor symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats and there are lots of ways in which we can cool our bedroom down:

  • Loose fitted PJ’s, preferably with something that helps to wick away moisture, natural fibres like bamboo.
  • Keep a spare pair of PJs easily accessible in case we need to change in the middle of the night. This way we are not routing through draws which may wake us up further.
  • Damp flannel on the bedside table.
  • Fan with a remote so you can easily adjust the settings.
  • Use separate duvets if you share a bed, you are then creating your own microclimate and your partner isn’t adding to the heat.
  • Use a lower tog duvet.
  • Avoid products with foam in them, foam holds on to heat and moisture and can therefore feel as though you are sleeping on a hot water bottle. Instead, opt for more breathable solutions such as polyester or natural fibres.
  • If you cannot sleep, get up. The worst thing to do is to lay there still and stress and worry about not getting enough sleep. Stress and worry will cause your body to think it is in danger and start producing wake promoting hormones such as cortisol, which means you will find it more difficult to get back to sleep. Try to do something to take your mind off it, such as completing your winddown routine again, this might consist of reading a book or listening to a podcast.

Discover the Silentnight Lift Breathe range

If getting a peaceful sleep is high on your list of priorities, but you’ve been struggling with hot flushes and night sweats, then you’ll be pleased to hear that Silentnight have developed a mattress that is scientifically proven to help reduce symptoms of menopause.

Silentnight’s Lift Breathe Mattress works in four ways: the Intense sleep surface works to reduce cortisol levels and morning stress, while the platinum pad is a breathable alternative to foam (but just as comfortable). The breathable sleep system is ideal if you get hot in the night or struggle with night sweats, and the Mirapocket spring-zoned support helps to soothe aches and pains.

Night sweats and hot flushes are one of the most recognisable menopause symptoms (and you can find out more about them here). The mattress works to enhance breathability and transports heat and moisture away from your body, and it’s hypoallergenic too.

You can purchase the mattress on its own, in four size options – and we also have it available as a divan bed in a choice of stylish, contemporary shades to suit your home.

Pared down and concise, the Faace skincare range is all about gentle treatments that pull serious punches. With beautiful, sensorial fragrances and names like Sweaty Faace, Dirty Faace and Stress Faace to help you choose the product you need, it’s easy to slot a Faace formula into your everyday routine.

Founder Jasmine Wicks-Stephens shares everything you need to know about her soon-to-be iconic brand…

What inspired you to create the Faace range?

I’ve worked in beauty for almost 20 years, helping brands launch internationally and have always wanted to create something for myself. Doing the job, I’ve been surrounded by amazing beauty experts – journalists, skin experts, aromatherapists – and we all joined forces on Faace, including my husband Dan who is an excellent designer.

The idea came when I’d just become a new mum and when brushing my teeth even got bumped off the list some nights due to sheer exhaustion, I realised that what was out there (multi-step routines that require you to be your own skin chemist), and what I was doing previously in my beauty routine wasn’t realistic for a time poor, tired mum.

Also at that time, I worked in an all female office and we were period obsessed. Obsessed with how our cycles would sync and how it impacted our skin. I was a big Period Faace candidate. But when I went to try and find something to pacify the skin problems, I couldn’t find anything. And so, Tired Faace and Period Faace (and Sweaty Faace) were born.

How do hormones affect our skin’s balance?

Whether it’s stress, periods or menopause related hormones, they can play havoc with our skin. From dryness to spots, fine lines and wrinkles to redness, hormones can show up in our skin. Traditionally skincare has looked at skin type – dry/ageing etc. But that’s problematic in that firstly, you have to know exactly what your skin type is and also, it’s targeting concerns only for that type. But what if skin has contradictory concerns like dry skin and spots at the same time? This is what we’re looking to provide – easy solutions, so you can grab for just a couple of items but know they are going to be super effective.

Which products help to solve a midlife/menopause problem?

Perimenopausal and menopausal skin concerns can include dryness, blemishes, redness, hyperpigmentation, lack of elasticity, dullness. Menopause Faace is our bestseller. It’s a cream and mask combo that also works to prime the skin. Not only is the creamy texture great for moisturising a dry complexion, it also mattifies on the skin so works as a great base for make-up. You can slather on a thick layer overnight and wake up feeling plumper and more hydrated. Knowing that menopausal skin can have multiple concerns, we’ve included lots of different ingredients to help. For example, you could be getting spots again for the first time in 20 years.

For dry skin, we’ve included ingredients like hyaluronic acid/glycerin that can work well to keep skin moisturised, ingredients to calm the skin and help reduce blemishes like rose water and zinc, and something with skin regenerating properties like rosehip or vitamin A to help keep skin springy. You can also find that sometimes traditional anti-ageing creams are very heavy on the skin, which is the last thing you need if skin is hot or greasy. Plus, it comes in a hefty 100ml tube, which is better value than skin creams that come in 30ml or 50ml sizes.

Menopause Faace is complemented really well with the Dull Faace Cleanser, which we have in an exclusive bundle for QVC. This creamy/clay formula is packed full of lots of active ingredients to not only thoroughly cleanse but also treat the skin with its brightening, nourishing formula.

The ingredients list for Dull Faace is extensive, but it contains a trio of acids for brightening as well as vitamin C and avocado to name a few.

We’ve also worked with an aromatherapist on the blends, so if you enjoy a spa-like product, then Faace is for you. All of our products are vegan and ethically sourced and we also donate to two organisations with purchases – The Menopause Charity, set up by menopause doctor Dr. Louise Newson and also Hey Girls, where we operate on a buy one, give one initiative, providing sanitary products to those experiencing period poverty.

I love the fact that our products are branded for your ‘Menopause’, ‘Period’ or ‘Sweaty’ Faace too, as it feels feministic to be like, so what, I am experiencing that, and owning it! Conversations around these topics have been taboo for women in the past, and we are passionate about changing that.

Combining sleek style with comfortable fits, Tommie Copper is redefining compression wear. The brand launched in 2010 and is dedicated to helping you live more comfortably every day through a comprehensive and systematic approach to pain management.

Their industry-leading innovations and patented technologies continue to redefine the industry standards of comfort, performance and versatility within compression wear. The business is built on proprietary science, but at their core they are simply about empowering people to feel better in themselves.

How it started

SVP of Business Development Julia Graham has more to share about this game-changing brand:

The founder Tom was in a bad waterskiing accident and after breaking bones and going to the doctor, the doctor said he needed to wear compression garments. Everything he wore was too tight and constrictive and he thought, what is the point of compression if you can’t wear it? At that point, compression was really medical grade or athletic and there was nothing for the everyday customer. So, he developed a line of comfortable compression for all-day wear.

The role of copper

Tommie Copper’s patented Copper Znergy technology is a premium, anti-odour technology that fuses together the natural benefits of copper and zinc to enhance the performance of fabrics. Our Copper Znergy fabric is permanently infused into our fabrics and won’t wash out. The combination of copper and zinc creates a superior anti-odour quality that eliminates the growth of odour-causing microbes on the fabric.

How can compression wear help women in midlife?

Feeling better should be as simple as getting dressed in the morning. Our comfortable compression products can be worn all day and provide all day comfort, relief from aches and muscle soreness and help with muscle recovery. We all have aches at some point in our lives, especially as we get older, so why not help yourself feel better and make it as easy as getting dressed every day.

Also, our proprietary fabric has wicking benefits to keep you cool and dry and premium anti-odour benefits.

Pretty You London is a British company specialising in luxe, contemporary designs with sustainability in mind. Their story began with slippers and eventually sprung into sleek nightwear and cosy loungewear. Think timeless styles that evoke feelings of attainable luxury and comfort.

Let’s hear from the founder, Rebecca:

“We create looks designed by our in-house design team, helping women feel empowered and comfortable in the outfit they start the mornings in and end the evenings in. Feminine, effortless and wearable are key factors that come into play in the design process, with regular fit tests and quality control to ensure you feel like your nightwear, loungewear and slippers encase you in a comforting hug. We believe in making the most of life’s simple pleasures with relaxation and peace being our inspiration.

Our current Bamboo range is our first step towards becoming a sustainable brand, with being plant-friendly at the forefront of our plans. Our new packaging collaboration with Movo allows us to use branded, reusable packaging that chooses circularity over linearity, and surpasses traditional cardboard boxes. Our durable packaging redefines norms, reduces carbon footprint, whilst lightening the impact on our planet with single-use plastics.”

What are the benefits of sustainable fabrics like bamboo? How can these help women in midlife?

Bamboo viscose offers many benefits that make it a popular choice for nightwear:

  • Softness and comfort: Bamboo fabric is known for its softness and luxurious feel against the skin. Nightwear made from bamboo is often described as silky-smooth, making it comfortable for sleep.
  • Moisture-wicking: Bamboo fabric has natural moisture-wicking properties, absorbing moisture away from the body and keeping you dry throughout the night. This can be especially beneficial for people who tend to sweat while sleeping and ladies going through menopause to ease night sweats.
  • Breathability: Bamboo fabric is highly breathable, allowing for better airflow compared to some other fabrics. This helps regulate body temperature, keeping you cooler on warmer nights and warmer on cooler nights.
  • Hypoallergenic: Bamboo fabric is naturally hypoallergenic and tends to be gentler on sensitive skin. It’s less likely to cause allergic reactions or irritation, making it a good choice for those with skin sensitivities or allergies.
  • Sustainably sourced: Bamboo is a sustainably sourced plant. It grows quickly, requires minimal water, and doesn’t need pesticides or fertilisers to thrive. We’ve chosen our supplier carefully to ensure our bamboo is responsibly sourced and its production doesn’t have any negative impact on the communities that surround the bamboo forests.
  • Durability: Despite its softness, bamboo fabric is durable. It tends to hold up well even after multiple washes, retaining its softness and shape.
  • Antibacterial: Bamboo has natural antibacterial properties that help reduce odour-causing bacteria. This means that bamboo nightwear may stay fresher for longer periods between washes compared to some other fabrics.

Bamboo nightwear can be particularly beneficial for menopausal women due to several reasons:

  • Temperature regulation: Menopause often brings about hot flashes and night sweats due to hormonal changes. Bamboo nightwear’s moisture-wicking and breathable properties can help manage these symptoms by wicking away moisture and allowing better airflow, keeping the body cooler and more comfortable during sleep.
  • Softness and comfort: During menopause, the skin can become more sensitive. Bamboo fabric’s soft and smooth texture can be gentle on sensitive skin, reducing the risk of irritation or discomfort.
  • Hypoallergenic properties: Menopausal women may be more prone to skin sensitivities or allergies. Bamboo’s hypoallergenic nature provides a more comfortable sleep experience.

“Choosing the right nightwear during menopause can significantly impact comfort levels during sleep, and bamboo nightwear’s unique properties can cater to many of the specific needs women might have during this phase.”

What are your most popular lines at this time of year?

Some of our bestselling styles during chilly autumn/winter months are:

  • Anya slippers: we’re known for our luxurious and comfortable slippers. Our beautiful Anya faux fur slippers are embellished with a velvet bow and diamante jewel making them irresistibly glamorous and ultra-cosy.
  • Cosy chevron lounge set: this snuggly set embodies comfort, warmth and style, creating the perfect setting for a relaxed evening indoors.
  • Bamboo lace pyjama set: a fab choice for a cosy winter night. Despite its delicate appearance, this set pairs the luxurious softness of bamboo fabric with the elegance of lace detailing, creating a stylish set perfect for chilly evenings.

I always think that around November and December is the perfect time of year to have some fun with fashion. You can try something different simply by selecting pieces that feel ‘special’, without completely overhauling your wardrobe. I’m all about re-wearing pieces that you adore, and am firmly anti-sequin – how many times have you felt pressured to buy something excessively bejewelled because it’s ‘what you do’ as the year ends, only to wear it once and then confine it to the back of your wardrobe?

With my edit, you’ll be able to choose pieces that can be worn and styled as partywear, but can also be slotted back into your everyday repertoire for a more relaxed look.

So how do we achieve this?

We can approach this in a few key ways: looking at shape, fabric choice and colour. Let’s start with shape.

Nailing the perfect silhouette

I love a tuxedo suit like this Wynne Collection jacket. It creates a confident, powerful look when worn together with the matching trousers, or can be separated for a slightly more relaxed effect. To dress this Wynne Collection jacket down, team with some premium denim in a slim shape for a look that’s perfect for drinks with friends.

For a pop of colour, this fuchsia jacket is amazing. There’s been a huge move towards trouser suits in bright colours, and this can easily work for a special occasion. The sleeveless shape creates bold contrast and effortlessly looks sharp, tailored and modern.

If you want a little texture, this statement White Stuff design features velvet fabrication for a decadent look, or try boucle for something a little more quirky.

To pair with the clean lines of your suit, I love an oversized shirt. This one from Everyday Jones is perfect. You can team it with tuxedo trousers or palazzo trousers, and simply add statement jewellery to finish the look.

Speaking of palazzo trousers, I’m a fan because it’s a key piece that does all the heavy lifting. Try these Wynne Collection ones in a funky skirt style. A sleeveless roll neck or satin blouse adds interest, or for more drama, go for the trusty tuxedo jacket.

Finally, if you prefer a more traditionally feminine silhouette, a layered skirt in a gauzy fabric can pair beautifully with a statement jacket to nip you in at the waist, and still feel relatively casual and comfy with soft knitwear and boots.

My top tip: don’t always focus on shape in your top pieces; instead, try changing the shape of the bottom pieces to create impact.

Now, let’s move onto fabrication.

Fabric and feel

Using pile and textured fabrics are a great way to up the glamour stakes for your partywear outfits. These fabrics also adapt colours and tones in a unique way to help make a statement.

With these fabrics, a more modern approach would be to switch up your textures, rather than keeping it monotone. For example, a satin wide leg trouser with a more structured matte jacket adds glamour to your outfit, or team the satin trouser with crisp white shirt or luxe knitwear.

As before, this White Stuff velvet blazer adds decadence and texture and can be mixed with satins, cottons and even denim.

If you love the drama of plisse dresses and skirts, this stunning plisse dress from Danni Minogue in a pewter shade has structure, drama and a touch of sparkle.

Tulle works in a similar way to plisse as it adds volume while still looking elegant. This Phase Eight dress has a monochrome print with subtle spot detailing and the round, high neckline is gorgeous.

If you love the forgiving, drapey nature of satin, we have a lot of options. Wide leg trousers from Apricot are tailored but still floaty and comfortable, or you could choose a satin blouse like this one from Wynne Collection.

The contrasting chiffon sleeves feel playful and add some structure too!

I love lace as it adds drama and texture without feeling gaudy. This Danni Minogue blouse offers a structured shoulder and a gorgeous high neckline, while still feeling open and celebratory with the sheer lace accents.

(Faux) leather is another winner in my book. A fitted midi skirt can be worn so often and you can dress it up or down depending on your needs. This one from Ruth Langsford sits just above the knee and the solid waistband means you can tuck tops in or wear them loose too.

If looking for prints, my advice is too move away from ditsy prints and choose larger scale designs with more of an abstract effect in deeper jewel tones. Helene Berman is known for her gorgeous shirt dress style, which you can browse here.

Accessorising with colour

Jewel tones come into their own this season, either in clothing or accessory pops – green is a newer shade that I absolutely love. Try a more understated palette of black and cream and accent with accessories in metallic hues, or bags with lustre or shimmer like this Ruth Langsford piece.

Aimee Kestenburg’s vanilla leather bag screams luxury and is functional and so elegant.

You can add texture and colour with faux fur, like this Paul Costelloe scarf – which is deliciously cosy for winter without looking heavy or boxy.

For an accessory with real impact, these stunning Moda in Pelle metallic loafers add a vibrant pop of colour you could enjoy year-round.

Even if you are keeping your outfit more paired back, adding excitement with your accessories can really elevate a look. Try a metallic clutch like the Ruth Langsford one above to lift an outfit. And the great news is that accessories like these can use to elevate simple jeans and a top for any night out, not just a special occasion.

The pieces I’ve chosen can be worn and styled in a more relaxed way to ensure you can wear them multiple times.

Most importantly, buy what you absolutely love and enjoy feeling fabulous!

This World Menopause Day, we’re discussing heart health (and lots more) with some of our QVC presenters. Let’s find out their easy hacks to support their wellbeing as they go through perimenopause and menopause.

Jackie Kabler

One of the things I’ve seen make a huge difference over the past few years has been taking a high dose collagen supplement daily. We talk a lot in beauty shows about how the depletion of collagen levels speeds up in midlife, and I’ve noticed the supplement really helping my skin and hair. And exercise is vital for me. I’ve been a runner for nearly 20 years, but I run longer distances than ever now, and I lift weights too. Feeling strong and fit is so important in later life and exercise is also great for my mental health – it makes me happy!

Catherine Huntley

The first half of the year was very challenging for me due to caring for a family member who was very unwell. During that time I allowed my own health to slide in terms of fast food, takeaways, more units of wine a week than is healthy and no exercise. I realised this was impacting my mental health, too, as I piled on the pounds and felt more and more sluggish.

At the end of April I made a conscious decision to make some major changes which included cutting out alcohol and eating more fresh, unprocessed foods. I also incorporated short daily yoga (even 10 minutes a day on my busier days helps and is worth setting the alarm 10 minutes earlier for).

Now, four months later, I am feeling better than ever and have lost three stone in weight. It was never the plan to keep on going, I just thought I’d do a ‘reset’, but now I feel so good that I’ve made the aforementioned changes my normal routine. I never thought I’d be teetotal! It was only meant to be for a few weeks but the benefits are exponentially outweighing the drawbacks. My life is still full of challenges but I’m so happy I’ve been able to take control of my health and wellbeing. I now feel far better equipped to take on whatever the day throws at me. At 51, now feels a significant time in my life to start truly caring for myself as well as others.

Katy Pullinger

Now that I’ve hit the perimenopause window, there are a few things I have done to try and balance how I feel. Other than the obvious, thank you HRT, I have also looked at my diet to make sure that I am eating a lot more whole foods and avoid ultra processed.

One of the most helpful tweaks I have made regarding food, however, is to eat earlier. For me, it means a better night’s sleep and also it helps combat the peri menopause weight gain and bloat. I don’t like to eat any later than 7pm or I just feel sluggish and uncomfortable. Before 6pm is even better! Moving more is essential, walking is my favourite way to get some exercise. I keep track of my pace with the Fit Bit app to make sure I’m getting the most out of the walk.

My GP’s advice was ‘walk fast enough that you could still manage a conversation, but you couldn’t sing’. I’m lucky to live by the coast so the fresh sea air is an added bonus to the walk.

Pipa Gordon

I have to say menopause has come at me like one of those long cross country American trains – it just keeps coming! It started about seven years ago and has been one symptom after another. I started HRT about three years ago and that has been a huge help, so I’m grateful for that. But I’m also doing things to manage the changes. I’m eating much healthier I think than I did ten years ago, I’ve never been a big drinker, but now try to only have a glass of wine one or two evenings each week, and I’ve also upped my intention when it comes to fitness.

Just being active doesn’t seem to cut it any longer. I tried the gym for a few months but quickly got bored. I much prefer the motivation of a group environment, so have started playing squash and doing circuit training, both of which feel great for my physical and heart health.

The next challenge is to remember to take some additional supplements, I think there are great benefits to be had there. It’s such a huge life change isn’t it? Right at the time when kids are off to university and parents need additional support too. There’s lots to balance, but we can do it!

Julia Roberts

I’ve always made a conscious effort to supplement my diet with vitamins and minerals since becoming vegetarian in 1986, but since menopause I’ve added a probiotic to my morning cocktail as I was experiencing some gut issues. The other key thing for me is exercise, which in my case is Pilates.

Not only does it keep my body supple and strong it is good for mental well-being. If I’m stressed or upset, I head to the cabin at the bottom of my garden for a workout and nine times out of ten emerge feeling refreshed and restored both mentally and physically.

On Tuesday 3rd October we’re excited to bring you an hour-long show devoted to sorting out your midlife skin issues with Skinsense, founded by QVC customer favourite Abi Cleeve (who you might recognise from Ultrasun shows, as she brought the pioneering brand over to the UK from Switzerland over 20 years ago).

We sat down with Abi to find out a little more about Skinsense, why the range is so perfect for women going through midlife and menopause, and asked her about an exciting new launch too…

What was your inspiration for starting Skinsense?

Pure madness! For over 25 years I’ve been working with the latest technological advancements in skincare. Ultrasun uses innovative lamellar technology that allows us to lock in sun protection, achieving super-long-lasting UVA and UVB protection. When I looked at my tired, dehydrated skin after a long day, I questioned, why can’t we use this amazing formulation technique to lock in hydration, targeted skin strengtheners and highly active ingredients? This was my lightbulb moment and the point at which I started developing Skinsense. It took four years of testing and development and then Skinsense was born! I called it Skinsense as that is exactly what it is about – genuine scientific sense – no gimmicks, no tricks – just real results for real people.

Tell us why Skinsense is the right range for women going through midlife and menopause.

I am passionate about providing solution-based skincare and ultimately skin confidence for my customers. During midlife and while experiencing menopause, our skin can go through many changes, including breakouts, sensitivity and dehydration. The products that may have been your essentials in the past, may not be what your menopausal skin needs now. This can leave women unsure where to turn. Here at Skinsense, we offer several ranges containing highly potent, targeted ingredients that help to tackle common skin concerns for ageing skin such as pigmentation, lack of elasticity and loss of radiance. Skinsense enables women to have beautiful skin, all day, every day, no matter what midlife throws at them. Plus – we are all too busy to be constantly moisturising!

What’s your hero, can’t-be-without product?

I would have to say that my hero, stand-out product in the range is our award-winning, bestselling Overnight Leave-On Mask. It has a luxurious, no-nonsense application and transforms dull, lacklustre skin with intense, slow-release hydration. Packed with powerful active ingredients, it renews moisture-levels, restores lost bounce and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It supports the management of hormonal and reactive skin and leaves it feeling hydrated and glowing. If you were to try one product from Skinsense I would recommend this one.

Skinsense launch an exciting new product in the 3rd October show – the Menopause Support Gummies (product number 736948). Here’s a bit more about them…

The gummies are one of the first we’ve seen from a heritage QVC beauty brand, what made you choose to venture into this area?

Like so many women, for years every January I had been making a resolution to focus more on my health and nutrition, and this often resulted me in spending a small fortune on tablets or powdered forms of various vitamins and minerals. Despite my enthusiasm, a busy schedule meant that by February the jar was still full. By March, it was at the back of my kitchen cupboard only to be found a year later, out of date and reminding me I had failed (again!)

I never gave myself a chance to build up any of the desired benefits in my system – and as we all know with supplements – consistency is key. I started developing formulas which would be as compatible as the skincare I’ve worked on for so long – effective products that fit seamlessly into my life without a second thought. As soon as the first gummy samples arrived from the factory, I knew we’d found just that – mainly because I ate them all It was the first time I had completed a course! I keep a set by the kettle and a set on my desk, and that helps me take them every day without fail.

Shop the full Skinsense range here.

Hosted by Henpicked: Menopause in the Workplace and powered by headline sponsors HSBC UK, first direct, M&S Bank and Peppy, the industry-recognised Menopause Friendly Employer Awards 2023 were presented by broadcaster and author Louise Minchin on Thursday September 14, 2023 at the Royal Lancaster Hotel. Over 350 guests gathered there while another 250 joined virtually from across the country.

Now in its second year, the 2023 Menopause Friendly Employer Awards recognise organisations and individuals whose commitment and determination have succeeded in providing support, solutions and resources that normalise menopause in the workplace.

The Most Menopause Friendly Environment category attracted a wide range of applications from sectors as diverse as third sector, public sector and global organisations. There was compelling evidence of excellent practice from organisations ensuring their workplace is supportive, from the provision of free health care consultations and supplying sanitary products in bathrooms through to tailored workplace adjustments.

What QVC are doing to raise awareness of menopause

Supported and spearheaded by the Gender Equality @ Q TMRG (team member resource group), menopause has been a key issue when discussing the topic of gender equality in our organisation.

We launched our first Menopause Policy for team members less than a year ago, in October 2022.

This robust policy aims to make the workplace more inclusive, while normalising discussions around menopause and allowing team members to access vital services and products to support their symptoms – this includes Care Packages rolled out to all UK work places, which are filled with clean clothing and underwear, shower products including a towel, and tampons and sanitary towels. It also includes a shower pass, which means team members don’t have to ask reception for shower access – placing control, convenience, and dignity in our team members’ hands. Packages are available in sizes small, medium, large, and extra-large.

We’re also working towards Menopause Friendly Accreditation and continue to build out our comprehensive product and editorial resource Menopause Your Way, showing up for customers through live TV shows, an expert-developed product offering and a wealth of interviews and articles, providing judgement-free information on all aspects of the midlife experience, from HRT to healthy eating.

Why we won the award

The Independent Panel was particularly impressed by the way in which we listened to our workforce, in order to create a menopause-friendly environment to meet the needs of all our team members.

Along with our care packages, we’ve implemented small (but meaningful) changes that can contribute positively to the everyday wellbeing and morale of our workforce, such as using avatars or having cameras off during online meetings to help colleagues to feel psychologically safe at work.

The panel felt that all activities, large and small, spoke of an organisation focused on providing the best possible experience of menopause in the workplace.

Koreen Fader, CEO and UK Market Lead says:

“I’m so proud of the team for this amazing accomplishment. Your hard work, dedication, and passion really shines through in everything you do to help break the taboo of menopause and this award means that we can celebrate the progress you’ve made for our team members.”

Sarah Malik, Ethics & Compliance Manager and Gender Equality @ Q TMRG Chair, shares her thoughts on this milestone win:

“This amazing team of only 13 people have found the time, in addition to their day jobs, to make a huge difference for all our team members at QVC UK. The thought process, the dedication to achieve results, listening to feedback, negotiation with leaders and putting reasonable adjustments in place has been relentless. In just over 12 months, we have made QVC UK a better place to work, not just for those experiencing menopause symptoms, but also for those working with others who are experiencing symptoms, helping them understand what help is available and enabling a better work environment. I’m so proud to be working with this team and we are very grateful that the hard work of the team has been recognised.”

We were presented with the award by sponsor BAE Systems.

“At BAE Systems, we’re very proud to be sponsoring the MFEA2023 Awards,” says Vicky Bawa, Head of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion BAE Systems. “The Awards give us a great opportunity to show our commitment to our employees’ wellbeing. In addition, we welcome the opportunity to share our experience and support other organisations as they embrace menopause friendly policies and programmes.”

We’re so proud of this milestone win!
