I’m not going on holiday this year, why do I need SPF?

It’s lovely to chat with you Hannah! First things first, we’d love to know a bit about where to begin when it comes to changing sleeping habits. Starting a whole new sleeping ritual can be daunting, so where is the best place to begin?

Start with something simple – something that doesn’t take you a lot of time to do and can easily fit into your routine now. When changing things up, don’t do too much at once. You often see articles with titles like “10 Ways to Help You Get to Sleep”, buy don’t try all ten things at once, because the chances are you’ll be worrying too much about trying to fit everything in and end up being too stressed to sleep! Instead try one thing at a time and get a feel if that works for you. If it does, great! If not, try something else. Only you will know what works for you, and of course, if you are currently sleeping really well then there’s no need to change anything!

How can we change our bedrooms to create an optimal space to sleep in? Does light really affect our sleep patterns as much as people say? What about our bedding?

When looking at the ideal sleep environment, I like to say we need to give it a little bit of TLC, this stands for Temperature, Light and Comfort.

Temperature
Temperature is a really important factor to consider, as our core body temperature actually needs to drop by a couple of degrees in order to get access to the good quality sleep we need. Although this is a natural process that happens within the body, there are many things we can do to ensure this happens. Ensuring the heating is turned down throughout the night is a must, as this will allow the room to cool down, plus it’s a great way to save energy! The bed itself is also a key component in regulating our body temperature. If you are prone to overheating at night, you may find that you need to change some of the products you are using.

Bedding plays a huge role in regulating our temperature as we sleep. Firstly, we need to look at your duvet, as the British weather fluctuates massively and we should always be changing our duvet with the seasons. Your winter duvet should be slightly thicker, around 10.5 tog. This should then be swapped out for a thinner duvet in the summer, around 4 tog max.

We then need to look at your mattress. The material your mattress is made from can greatly affect your body temperature. Breathable, temperature regulating materials such as polyester or natural materials can channel heat and moisture away from the body, aiding your core body temperature regulation. Foams on the other hand can have the opposite effect as they tend to hold onto more heat and moisture, therefore if you overheat regularly, perhaps look into a mattress made from fibres like Silentnight’s Airmax.

Pillows also play a key role in temperature regulation and follow the same principal as the mattress. People who overheat frequently may find foam pillows very warming compared to fibres pillows, such as polyester or natural pillows. Light
We sleep when it is dark for a reason. We have light receptors at the back of our eyes which link directly to the part of our brain that regulates sleep. Natural morning light is bright, and this type of light can tell the body to stop producing sleep hormones, such as melatonin and start producing wake promoting hormones. Natural evening light is dull and darker, therefore having an opposite effect on the body by prompting the release of sleep promoting hormones, helping you fall asleep more easily.

Applying the wrong type of light at the wrong time can have the opposite effects on our body. For example, applying bright light in the evening can keep us awake. This can be one of the reasons we struggle to fall asleep and are woken up early in the summer. Here, a good pair of black-out blinds, curtains or even a simple eye mask can help block out some of that bright light and allow you to sleep more easily. In the winter we find we have the opposite problem and we often struggle to wake up. Here, a dawn simulating alarm clock can be a great way of mimicking the sunrise for a more natural waking process.

Comfort
Comfort is the main driving force for a good night’s sleep. We’ve all been in those hotels where the bed just isn’t right and we have felt the effects the following day. But how do we make the subjectiveness of comfort fit for every sleeper? This is where the bed comes into play. The material the bed is made of plays a key role; for example, springs are great for supporting your spine throughout the night. We are then often lying down, staring at the ceiling or watching the clock, wondering why we can’t sleep. We need to ensure we allow ourselves time to relax and wind down before we sleep. An hour before bed, we should be doing calming activities, which can be anything from meditation, reading or breathing exercises. Although these don’t necessarily work for everyone, you need to find something that works for you – something that helps the body and the mind relax. This doesn’t always mean stepping away from technology as many people will tell you to do, but it does mean using your technology in the right way. Turn your phone’s eye comfort mode on, which swaps the harsh blue light for subtle yellow tones. You can then use your devices to listen to podcasts, help with breathing exercises or play sounds to help you escape from the stresses of everyday life.

Finally, what’s a night-time essential you simply couldn’t live without?

My absolute essential is my best pal Benji. Benji is my teddy rabbit who I’ve had since I was little. As humans we only sleep when we feel safe – it links back to caveman times when we used to be chased by animals and to this day, we still need that sense of security in order to allow us to sleep. Benji makes me feel safe and calm, especially when I am travelling around to different places. You don’t need a teddy for this as you can create a sense of safety or calmness using anything. Why not try using a certain pillow or scents like pillow sprays?

To mark the momentous occasion of Elizabeth Grant’s 100th birthday, we sat down with her granddaughter Margot Grant Witz to talk about Elizabeth’s amazing achievements in the beauty industry and the brand’s exciting range, available right here at QVC.

It’s lovely to chat to you, Margot! Many of our customers have already heard of Elizabeth Grant’s incredible skincare formulas, but in a nutshell, what’s the brand’s ethos?

We genuinely love our customers, as well as helping their confidence and self-esteem grow. We want to help them realise that you have to grow and evolve in terms of who you are and what you are doing, which is we have been around for 75 years (and counting!). Not only because we make a phenomenal product, but because we value adapting, listening, and transforming with the community and world around us.

Our ethos is that we are customers too, and we want to create quality products that empower people as they get older. We truly believe that we are the three generations of cheerleaders in the world of skincare! So often, women around the age of 40 and above are made to feel that they should disappear, that they are “too old”, and that is something we have been working to change the narrative of for the past 75 years. We are one of the only privately-owned skincare companies in the world, owned and operated by three generations of women who make, manufacture and formulate every product in-house in our privately-owned manufacturing facility in Toronto, Canada. We do not buy someone else’s formulations and put our name on it, we make them from scratch, because we are customers too. Torricelumn, which is our proprietary blend, is our exclusive compound that sets us apart from the rest of the world.

We all know what Elizabeth Grant stands for today, but how did this inspiring company begin?

It all started with an accident. My grandmother, Elizabeth Grant, did not always have the flawless skin she has today. Her skin was damaged during the Second World War and it became a source of personal shame and embarrassment – to the point where she avoided going out in public and living her life fully. All of that changed in 1948 when Elizabeth discovered a natural substance that was used to treat war wounds. She had it specially formulated with a unique blend of ingredients and began applying it to her own damaged skin. Gradually, but very noticeably, the transformation occurred. Within eight months, my grandmother’s skin had improved remarkably and was she able to get her confidence back and get back to the life and job she was so desperately missing.

My grandmother, who was a makeup artist at Elstree Studios in London, just wanted to get her confidence back in order to not only look and feel beautiful, but to ensure she could make others look and feel beautiful too. In her work as a makeup artist, one of her clients complimented her on her skin’s fresh, healthy and youthful appearance. Flattered and shocked that someone would actually compliment her skin after such damage being done to it, Elizabeth told her client about the miracle serum that she had created. The woman left with a sample, only to return 10 days later asking for more. It was in those 10 days that her client had discovered the power of Elizabeth’s moisturizing miracle. Her skin was starting to feel normal again and her symptoms – clogged pores and skin that looked tired and age-worn – were disappearing. When she visited my grandmother after those 10 days, her skin was glowing. Little did my grandmother know that the little product that she created would not only launch our company, but also create a new category in the skincare industry: the serum category for at-home use in 1948. At first she privately sold her products to people who asked, until she launched her trademarked secret to the public with the launch of her company in 1958 – and she did it with her ingredient known as Torricelumn.

For those who are new to the brand and want to try it out, what should they start with first?

The best place to begin is the Supreme Essence of Torricelumn. It is our hero product that not only launched our company 75 years ago, but has been dramatically improving people’s skin for over seven decades. It’s hypoallergenic, fragrance free, mineral oil free, silicone free, alcohol free, phthalate free, sulphate free, suitable for all ages, all skin types, all ethnicities, all genders, not tested on animals and can be used before absolutely any moisturiser you have at home.

For those with mature complexions, what would you recommend to boost their skincare regimen?

Have a really great system. Start with a hydrating cleanser, then a serum, a denser moisturizer and don’t forget to exfoliate once a week. Our caviar system is divine – it’s powerful but not heavy, it helps to keep that hydration reservoir while also improving the look of collagen and brightness. Also, add a neck cream (but this tip is for everyone 30+)! Our necks are areas that can almost sneak up on us, so prevention is key to love the look of your neck and decollete area. Also, don’t be afraid to add different actives into your routine. My mother Marion is all about seasonal skincare, while my grandmother and I always have a little bit of each range to give our skin the best boost.

It’s cold outside, so for those whose skin is feeling a bit parched, what can Elizabeth Grant do for their complexion?

We build a reservoir of hydration. Quite often people dismiss the importance of hydration in their skin, but remember the difference between a grape and a raisin is dehydration! So with all of our products they contain Torricelumn, which is our proprietary ingredient to help not only neutralize and change how our skin appears to be aging, but creates that beautiful reservoir to help maintain hydration for 24 hours.

I think often people worry about using a product that can help exfoliate their skin, but our Night Wonder Concentrate helps to remove the build-up of the dead skin cells, dry flakes and the roughness, while also ensuring there’s tangible hydration there too. It’s important to remove the surface debris that can lead to more dehydrated looking and feeling skin.

We know that caring for your skin overnight is just as important as during the day, so what does Elizabeth Grant have to offer that will give Q customers some well-deserved beauty sleep?

With all of our ranges, we have a complimentary night-time routine. They’re so much softer and brighter the next morning. That may seem like a silly tip, but my grandmother has always taught me: when your feet hurt, you can see it on your face!

Finally, what’s your personal favourite product from the brand that you simply couldn’t be without?

No matter where I am, or what I feel, if I have these three products, I know not only is it going to be a great-looking skin day but also, a great feeling skin day. The first two products are just so easy to use, and I can see the results almost immediately. They’re desert-island-must-haves!

To celebrate the brand’s launch here at QVC, we had a chat with their founder, Brendan Murdock, to discuss all things Anatome, from daily routines to catching those ZZZs.

Hi, Brendan! Thanks so much for talking to us. Anatome offers a whole range of specially-crafted fragrance blends for different moods and ambiences. In your opinion, which fragrances best suit which times of day?

We have a wonderful collection to share with Q customers! In the Discovery Set, you will find six 5ml essential oil blends, perfect for switching things up throughout the day (there’s also a Discovery Set with four favourites in it, too).

Balance + Stability is rich in patchouli, black spruce and geranium, and really suits movement practices such as yoga, or even just when you are feeling under pressure. Energy + Strength is an exquisite awakening oil scented with may chang, peppermint and neroli, which you can use through the day to help keep you moving, or in a movement class.

Personally, I love our Expression + Confidence oil, which has sea moss, cypress and camphor – I use it to help support my breathing and mindfulness.

Many people aren’t sure how to incorporate the power of essential oil blends into their daily routines. How would you recommend doing this for someone who has never used them before?

The most important step to remember is to apply your Anatome essential oil blends 20 minutes before bed or, if things are getting a bit late, even just five minutes before can really help! Apply a few drops across the sensory points, for example, the wrists and neck.

After one week of continual use, you should start to sleep more soundly each night, as the power of the scent is training your brain and body to recognise that it is time to sleep.

For those who are new to building a relaxing routine in the evening, do you have any easy ways to start promoting a better night’s sleep with the help of Anatome?

I think preparation is key. Going into winter, it’s worth keeping a cooler bedroom that is well-organised and calm. Treat your bedroom as a sanctuary, so if possible, keep it tidy with no clutter and perhaps a nice plant and bedside lamp. We suggest no television.

Once that is in place, then you can begin your ritual, which includes oils applied to the skin as I suggested above, lighting the candle and burning it for 20 minutes as you journal or read a book.
