Sad news…

It’s hard to believe it’s only a week since I was last with you because so much has happened since then… and I would give anything to be able to turn back time…  but I’m really sorry to be writing to tell you that my mum died last Monday morning.

Those of you who follow this blog will know that she was taken into hospital at the end of June, as she seemed to have lost the use of her legs and was immobile. We believed it to be temporary as that’s what we were advised, and so she was taken to a nursing home that specialized in rehabilitation. Try as they might, mum just couldn’t walk and she lost her appetite too. In September we managed with the help of social services to get her home adapted and arrange for carers to come in and she came home for two short days, but was completely unable to cope and was rushed to hospital.

The QA in Portsmouth were marvellous, but her condition deteriorated even further and so they organised her move to a beautiful nursing home in Liss, Hampshire. That was on Monday, October 7th, and we were advised that the care she would receive there would be end of life care. My sister Jenny and I spent as much time as possible with her, as did her grandchildren, which was lovely.  Although she couldn’t say much, she still recognised us, so we could share memories or look at photos. The last conversation we all had was when mum told us of a ‘lovely place’ she was going to, and that she wanted us to come with her. We asked her if it was the seaside, and she nodded, and smiled when we suggested what we would bring with us for a picnic. We told her we loved her and she said the same…

The last time I visited she was in a deep sleep and I couldn’t wake her. I sat and held her hand, but for once I was lost for words… I’d wanted to ask her when I should prune my roses; I had wanted to tell her that Honey could almost swim without her armbands and what a lovely time we’d had in Wales… But I did tell her I loved her, as did my sister when she saw her, and when we were all together by her side on Monday morning we didn’t need to say it, because we all knew.

Thank you so much for the incredibly kind words of support you’ve written and thanks too for your love and kindness – not just to me, but for mum and the whole family.

With my love,

Ali xx

  8. So sorry Ali to hear of the extremely sad passing of your mum, what you said took me right back to when my mum was in very poor health (lung cancer) she was in a beautiful nursing home only for a few days before she passed. We were all there for her, although she couldn’t speak we were chattering away to her, just normal day to day things and managed to get a smile out of her. They say Ali that their hearing is the last thing to lose, so i’m sure she would have heard every word you and your family would have said. I know it must be very hard for you at the moment, but think of the good times you had, and remember she will always be with you!

    With sincere condolences. xx

  28. Hi Ali.
I’m sitting in tears 😢 reading your sad news.
I lost My Lovely Mummy on the 14/05/19 at 1710.😢 5 mins after I left the ward. She waited till I left.
I’d been her carer She was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia in February but that’s not what she died of. She was rushed in to hospital on 13/05/19(My Birthday)She had a blockage in her gut which not going into details caused Pneumonia. They wanted to operate, but she deteriorated so quickly they end up after a big meeting Consultants etc. Placing a DNR.
I miss her big time. But Mummy still knew Me.
She enjoyed QVC and buying things in previous years Me too.
    Lots of Love Ali😘😘

  59. Oh Ali so sorry it’s always awful when Mum goes, it was a song on the radio or tv that would set me off, as I have got older I find some comfort if you can call it that to think she had a good life. Its when a child or young person passes I do particularly struggle with.
Having been retired for over a year now, I worked with my colleague in the HR office of a large supermarket we did have a few people pass away which was awful enough but most of our colleagues knew they could come into us if they were struggling with any issue we would lock the door sit and chat or just listen to them sometimes just sit in silence doing our work so they could recover enough to continue with their job and it all stayed inside those four walls, or at other times If I knew someone had been bereft or struggling I would just give them a hug no words, and they always just said thank you, it’s so wrong that many firms have diminished the HR caring side of things it went a long way. One beautiful colleague died recently she was 54, from diagnosis it took just 7 months, although she had a small family and just one daughter 140 people past and present that knew her from work came to the funeral which I thought was lovely for her.
Try not to be too upset lovely lady sending you the biggest hug too. xx

Our lives tick along quite happily then we are hit with Thunderbolt reminding us how special life is and how are parents have raised us to become caring and loving individuals.
Then in their hour of need we support and care for them as they have done for us.
My dad had a stroke last year and he is struggling with walking and unable to orally eat.
I have just returned from North Wales where my dad partner had an operation to remove tumour from her bladder . I am blessed to have a loving husband who supported me to take care of my parents. Just wanted to let you know how very brave I think you are to share your very sad news with us and to tell you how very sorry I am. You have a very lovely family and I know you will all be a great comfort to one another, your wonderful memories will also help, but I know when I lost my own lovely Mum, she left a huge void in my world and although it was a while ago it helps to talk about her and remember all of the funny little things she would say and do, and quite honestly she is always with us, and I’m sure you will find this Ali.

God Bless Ali, thinking of you.

  122. Hi Alison, I received your blog a couple of days ago as an e mail but it won’t accept a reply so I’ve been waiting to see it on here, I am so sorry to hear of your loss, it’s so awful and an end to an era, I know you are such a positive person, you will be telling yourself you were lucky to have had your mum for as long as you did, there are so many happy memories but the person with all the old stories has gone, I truly believe that there is m ore, her soul is watching and caring and waiting until you are all together again. I don’t know of anywhere big enough or if it is possible but I believe it, every one we miss and love will be with us again. love ~Maggie xx

  124. Dear Ali,

I was so very very sorry to hear the passing of your lovely Mum. However, I can’t help thinking what a lovely last conversation you had with her. In her mind it proved she was content, and in a very happy place with all those who meant so much by her side. Ali, I can assure you she would want you to remember all the happy times you shared with her, but most importantly she would want you to carry on enjoying your life – that would be her utmost wish. Having those words in my mind when my Mum and Dad passed away helped me cope with all the stages of grief, and I sincerely hope these words of comfort will do the same for you.

Sending lots of love at this difficult time.

    Love from Sue Radford x

  133. Dear Ali and Family

I was very sad to read of the passing of your lovely mum.

I am so, so sorry for your loss. The shock of it as I know is extremely hard to bear.

I lost my lovely, lovely Dad in 2009 and I saw him on the Saturday and on the Tuesday he was gone.

He passed as he wanted to in his sleep and I was so grateful he got to go the way he wished but it goes without saying that the shock was immense.

I never got the chance to say goodbye or that I loved him but you did and that is a blessing.

As we all know the saying “time is a healer” and from my own experience it is certainly true but we never get over the loss of a loved one we just learn to live with it.

My sincere condolences to you and your family on the loss of your mum.

Think of all the wonderful times.

  138. Dearest Alison, I had tears when I read your beautifully written but very sad post about the loss of your lovely Mum. The photo of the 4 of you is a priceless and beautiful reminder of the love you all share. You posted some lovely kind words to a post I’d left months ago to say I lost my Mum at 4 yrs old, I’m now 56. Daft folk ask how can you miss someone you don’t remember and I always answer because she’s my Mum! There are no words, but remember her and keep those memories close. Love Aileen x

  139. Dear Ali, losing your mam is one of the cruelist things that can happen to you. It feels like you have lost your best friend. I lost my mam 5 years ago this January, I hadn’t seen her for days, but I can only take joy that she was getting ready to go dancing, which was her passion. I miss her every day and think about her all the time. I carry a small guardian Angel in the hope that she is looking out for me. You never get over a death you just adapt to life without them. Hold your mam’s memory and she will be with you always. I’m so sorry you lost your mam.

  147. Dear Alison and Family.
I am very sorry to hear your sad news. I know what it feels like
    to lose a Mum.
When you feel able to, try to look beyond the sadness of the past few months.
To all the happy, funny and laughable times and memories you have of times spent with your Mum.
I feel sure she is still around, Watching over you all. There was obviously great love and friendship between your Mum, you and the family.
Energy like that does not disappear. I do not say that lightly.

  157. So sorry to read your sad news. I lost my darling Mum in 1989 she was just 43. 😓 However, my Grandad had a fall in July this year and could not walk. He was taken into hospital for 2 weeks and much like your Mum was then taken into a rehabilitation home. He stayed there for 10 weeks and then sadly he has had to go into a Nursing Home. Prior to this he was in his own bungalow and at 98 and with the support of us, his family was able to stay there with Carers coming in daily. He really is not well now and has heart failure and renal failure but we have made so many memories with him since his fall and taken so many photos. He is loved so much and I just hope that he never has to suffer. My thoughts are with you and your family at this time. ❤

  158. Dead Ali had missed you on Acc and thought I would check your blog. So so sorry to read that your mum had passed away. She looked such a lovely lady.
