Today is my birthday, and as promised on my last blog, I have a birthday giveaway of ten of my favourite QVC beauty products… more on that later!
So, today I celebrate my 66th birthday, but that pales into insignificance against the celebrations last weekend for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and the wonderful milestone she has reached! I was very happy to decorate my home to show my appreciation for the dedication to duty she has exhibited over the past seventy years.
In my front window, I had a flag with Her Majesty’s portrait on it and I captured this great photo through the JM by Julien MacDonald mirror that we have above our fireplace in the lounge. Did anyone else see the man himself alongside another QVC favourite, Lulu, on the first night of the four-day weekend? We were watching with my daughter’s family who we had round for the day. I’d also strung bunting, blown up red, white, and blue balloons and dotted several flags around the garden where I’d spent the morning planting up my hanging baskets and containers.
I used Richard Jackson’s Root Booster to give them a flying start, as did Dennis, my helping hand in the garden when he planted up my veg trug, very neatly I might add!
This year I’m growing (or trying to grow) carrots, radishes, lettuce, spring onions, chillis, aubergine, tomatoes, and runner beans. Fingers crossed, with a bit of TLC and plenty of RJ’s Flower Power, I’m hoping for a bumper crop.
My dad always grew runner beans and sweet peas. From my childhood, I have memories of the two rows of canes supporting the growing plants stretching out across the bottom of our garden. What would have been his 102nd birthday coincides with Father’s Day this year on June 19th, so a bit of a double whammy for me. He’d have been pleased to see how well my sweet peas are doing again this year. I’ve already picked two lots to bring indoors for their fragrance and colour… they will always remind me of him.
After I’d finished gardening, I headed to the kitchen to make a broccoli and walnut cheesy quiche, cheese spelt scones and this Victoria Sandwich cake! I’m normally pretty good at cake baking, but this one was a little ‘overdone’ at the edges. The sponge was good though and the jam and buttercream were spot on, if I do say so myself! We were able to dine ‘al fresco’ with Sophie and family for the first time this year! Although I was working for the other three days of the Platinum Jubilee, I did manage to catch the concert, which I thought was superb. The highlight, though, had to be Her Majesty entertaining Paddington Bear to tea at Windsor Castle, which had me laughing out loud.
So, I mentioned at the beginning of my blog that I was doing a birthday giveaway based around my top ten beauty products from QVC. Happy Birthday! Wow- what a prize. I love everything in the very generous bundle so I will keep my fingers & toes crossed!
My Dad also grew runner beans in the 70s when I was a child & I used to pretend it was “my jungle” I still love the smell of fresh beans to this day & I am sure that I love vibrant orangey/red geraniums because the colour is similar to the flowers on the beans.
Cake looks scrummy- I much prefer traditional cakes like sponges, drizzle cakes rather than the rather OTT cakes that are on trend at the moment piled with chocolates & sweets- far too sweet & sicky for me.
We have been growing vegetables as well as flowers since lockdown actually. Hubby took advantage of furlough & used his DIY skills to make a few vegetable trugs like yours to grow radishes, lettuces, Welsh onions & cauliflowers. He also made a beautiful dragon fly which adorns our arbour seat at the bottom of the garden, obelisks for my Raymond Evison clematis & seedling trays all from surplus wood at work which was put out for the skip! (he did ask permission before taking it) We are currently on “naturewatch” as we have discovered a pair woodpeckers in our hawthorn tree in the back garden & a family of robins visiting our maple in the front garden. I have been with you and QVC since it first launched and l remember that one of the first product’s was an alarm clock shaped like a car and the presentation took aprox 30 mins. There was only so much to say about it and it must have been a real struggle to fill the time allocated ! Celebrations all round as l celebrated our golden wedding anniversary yesterday and QVC and your self have been in our lives, and that of our bank balance ! for more than half of our 50 yrs ! What a great give away !

Hi Julia, Many Happy Returns on your Birthday, I caught your Kirks Folly show last week and really enjoyed going down memory lane again. I bought a Dream Keeper velvet jacket with fluted sleeves with a peplum hemline and beautiful embellishments on the jacket. Hadn’t realised it was so long ago wow has that jacket stood the test of time taking it with me on a cruise this summer.

Hi Julia many Happy Returns. I used my brain cell and I think the answer is c: 37years. Where do the years go?! The house looked lovely decorated for the constant in all our lives. I agree Paddington was so heartwarming.
Unfortunately I spent the celebrations in hospital with pneumonia and sepsis bit of a shock but was so well looked after and I am here to tell the tale. Patients had free TV and an Afternoon Tea to celebrate.
What luxury products to be given away and if I was lucky enough to win I would most certainly enjoy being pampered after what was a very stressful time for myself and my family.
