Silentnight is one of the most beloved brands stocked at QVC, offering a considered edit of bedding, mattresses, furniture and accessories all designed to help you sleep better.

We sat down with Hannah Shore, Sleep Knowledge and Research Manager, to find out how sleep changes in menopause, along with top tips to support your sleep using some of these superb Silentnight products.

All about hormones

The menstrual cycle comes to an end due to a change in hormones. Throughout the menstrual cycle, there is a regulation of hormones defined by the changes in two particular hormones; Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH). These in turn effect the production of steroid hormones oestrogen and progesterone. The beginning of the menstrual cycle sees a slight rise in FSH which causes ovarian follicles to enlarge and produce oestrogen levels to rise through the first half of the cycle called the Follicular Phase.

When oestrogen levels come to a peak this prompts the second half of the 28 day cycle, called the Luteal Phase. The increase in oestrogen instigates a reduction of FSH and a sudden release of LH which prompts oestrogen to decline in production and sees progesterone as the dominant hormone throughout these days.

During the menopause we see significant changes in these hormones. The onset of menopause sees the ovaries become less responsive to FSH with a decrease in the stimulation of ovarian follicles. This in turn reduces the amount of oestrogen that is produced. As there is a lack of oestrogen it means the body continues to produce FSH so we see increased levels of FSH and decreased levels of oestrogen throughout the menopause.

Along with the reduction in oestrogen and FSH we also see progesterone gradually decreasing in production with age. It is suggested that these changes in hormones cannot just have physiological effects on the body, the menopause also sees an increase of psychological issues such as depression and sociocultural factors such as religion, financial anxiety and the future.

How these hormones affect sleep

Oestrogen

Oestrogen can directly affect sleep architecture, the amount of time we spend in each different stage of sleep. Oestrogen has a direct impact on REM sleep, lighter sleep which is responsible for learning, memory consolidation and emotional processing. A reduction of oestrogen can cause people to find it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Progesterone

Progesterone helps to regulate our core body temperature. Temperature is important when it comes to sleep, in order to get access to that good quality sleep we need, our core body temperature needs to drop by a couple of degrees. It has also been suggested that progesterone is related to NREM sleep, a deeper stage of sleep which is responsible for repairing the body and flushing out any build up of toxins from the previous day. Therefore dysregulation of progesterone can cause spikes in core body temperature and a lighter more fractured sleeping pattern.

Tips for a better night’s sleep

We are not going to stop menopause from happening, the dysregulation of hormones and their effect will still happen, however we may be able to deal with some of the side effects which reduce our sleep. The main area we should focus on is temperature control. Around 75% of menopausal women will suffer from vasomotor symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats and there are lots of ways in which we can cool our bedroom down:

  • Loose fitted PJ’s, preferably with something that helps to wick away moisture, natural fibres like bamboo.
  • Keep a spare pair of PJs easily accessible in case we need to change in the middle of the night. This way we are not routing through draws which may wake us up further.
  • Damp flannel on the bedside table.
  • Fan with a remote so you can easily adjust the settings.
  • Use separate duvets if you share a bed, you are then creating your own microclimate and your partner isn’t adding to the heat.
  • Use a lower tog duvet.
  • Avoid products with foam in them, foam holds on to heat and moisture and can therefore feel as though you are sleeping on a hot water bottle. Instead, opt for more breathable solutions such as polyester or natural fibres.
  • If you cannot sleep, get up. The worst thing to do is to lay there still and stress and worry about not getting enough sleep. Stress and worry will cause your body to think it is in danger and start producing wake promoting hormones such as cortisol, which means you will find it more difficult to get back to sleep. Try to do something to take your mind off it, such as completing your winddown routine again, this might consist of reading a book or listening to a podcast.

Hosted by Henpicked: Menopause in the Workplace and powered by headline sponsors HSBC UK, first direct, M&S Bank and Peppy, the industry-recognised Menopause Friendly Employer Awards 2023 were presented by broadcaster and author Louise Minchin on Thursday September 14, 2023 at the Royal Lancaster Hotel. Over 350 guests gathered there while another 250 joined virtually from across the country.

Now in its second year, the 2023 Menopause Friendly Employer Awards recognise organisations and individuals whose commitment and determination have succeeded in providing support, solutions and resources that normalise menopause in the workplace.

The Most Menopause Friendly Environment category attracted a wide range of applications from sectors as diverse as third sector, public sector and global organisations. There was compelling evidence of excellent practice from organisations ensuring their workplace is supportive, from the provision of free health care consultations and supplying sanitary products in bathrooms through to tailored workplace adjustments.

What QVC are doing to raise awareness of menopause

Supported and spearheaded by the Gender Equality @ Q TMRG (team member resource group), menopause has been a key issue when discussing the topic of gender equality in our organisation.

We launched our first Menopause Policy for team members less than a year ago, in October 2022.

This robust policy aims to make the workplace more inclusive, while normalising discussions around menopause and allowing team members to access vital services and products to support their symptoms – this includes Care Packages rolled out to all UK work places, which are filled with clean clothing and underwear, shower products including a towel, and tampons and sanitary towels. It also includes a shower pass, which means team members don’t have to ask reception for shower access – placing control, convenience, and dignity in our team members’ hands. Packages are available in sizes small, medium, large, and extra-large.

We’re also working towards Menopause Friendly Accreditation and continue to build out our comprehensive product and editorial resource Menopause Your Way, showing up for customers through live TV shows, an expert-developed product offering and a wealth of interviews and articles, providing judgement-free information on all aspects of the midlife experience, from HRT to healthy eating.

Why we won the award

The Independent Panel was particularly impressed by the way in which we listened to our workforce, in order to create a menopause-friendly environment to meet the needs of all our team members.

Along with our care packages, we’ve implemented small (but meaningful) changes that can contribute positively to the everyday wellbeing and morale of our workforce, such as using avatars or having cameras off during online meetings to help colleagues to feel psychologically safe at work.

The panel felt that all activities, large and small, spoke of an organisation focused on providing the best possible experience of menopause in the workplace.

Koreen Fader, CEO and UK Market Lead says:

“I’m so proud of the team for this amazing accomplishment. Your hard work, dedication, and passion really shines through in everything you do to help break the taboo of menopause and this award means that we can celebrate the progress you’ve made for our team members.”

Sarah Malik, Ethics & Compliance Manager and Gender Equality @ Q TMRG Chair, shares her thoughts on this milestone win:

“This amazing team of only 13 people have found the time, in addition to their day jobs, to make a huge difference for all our team members at QVC UK. The thought process, the dedication to achieve results, listening to feedback, negotiation with leaders and putting reasonable adjustments in place has been relentless. In just over 12 months, we have made QVC UK a better place to work, not just for those experiencing menopause symptoms, but also for those working with others who are experiencing symptoms, helping them understand what help is available and enabling a better work environment. I’m so proud to be working with this team and we are very grateful that the hard work of the team has been recognised.”

We were presented with the award by sponsor BAE Systems.

“At BAE Systems, we’re very proud to be sponsoring the MFEA2023 Awards,” says Vicky Bawa, Head of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion BAE Systems. “The Awards give us a great opportunity to show our commitment to our employees’ wellbeing. In addition, we welcome the opportunity to share our experience and support other organisations as they embrace menopause friendly policies and programmes.”

We’re so proud of this milestone win!

We want to change the perception of midlife at QVC. When we launched Menopause Your Way over a year ago, our focus was on raising awareness of the myriad symptoms, myths and stigmas that exist around the topic of menopause, and encourage women to take charge of their health – while empowering them with expert advice, incredible products and a likeminded community for support and encouragement.

Now, we’re here with Turn to Face the Change, a national campaign in partnership with Good Housekeeping Magazine to showcase how women tackle the many changes midlife can bring, from career pivots to empty nesting and so much more.

As part of this campaign, we’ve partnered with Uninvisibility to bring you the Visible Change course, a free four-week online programmed to help you be the architect of your next chapter.

About Uninvisibility

Jane and Jacquie founded the business after meeting and sharing their passion for supporting women in midlife. Jacquie had spent most of her career in media and noticed that midlife women were being exited from the advertising industry, and then becoming invisible as a workforce. She had recently worked within the finance publishing sector and was horrified to learn that midlife women had not earned enough, had not saved enough, had a fraction of the pension pots of their male counterparts, were going to live until 100 and thus would become destitute and a burden on society – and she was angry.

Jane felt the same way. After a 30+year career as a creative director, she found herself invisible to her industry and faced ageism to her face with comments like: “I’d give you a job but you’d end up as the old lady at the back of the department doing the work no one else wants.” Jane thought, “If I can become invisible, what hope does anyone else have?” So she used her anger, talent and experience to create a social media campaign showcasing brilliant midlife women. It had 2m views in the first two weeks of the campaign.

Uninvisibility was born with a simple mission: to unleash the power of midlife women.

In the last four years they’ve have published the manifesto Invisible to Invaluable written by Jane and Carol Russell, run the Visible Start programme, which trains midlife women for real jobs in advertising, and created Visible Society, a community platform where midlife women can come together to learn, grow and support each other.

This exciting joint venture is all about delivering a programme wholly focused on giving midlife women ideas and tools to take the next steps to the potentially best part of her life! Not only will it deliver these life enhancing nuggets, but, equally importantly, a community where they can reach out, engage and connect with like-minded midlife women in our Visible Society community.

How does it work?

Each week there will be three sessions, they will consist of a pre-recorded film followed by a 15 minute Q&A session curated from comments on the live feed.

With sections on building your confidence, the menopause, reinvention and your career, you’ll be able to engage with the content either live or watch recordings, to suit your lifestyle and schedule.

Workbooks and programme notes will be available for all the sessions and throughout the week relevant content and articles will be posted on the community feed.

Sign up here to join the course in September.

If you’re looking for a sleek, luxurious haircare brand to introduce into your beauty routine, while still prioritising high-quality formulations that respect and care for your locks, then look no further than We Are Paradoxx. Founder Yolanda Cooper gives us all the details, including how these products can work for you in menopause and midlife.

I started We Are Paradoxx following a lightbulb moment, during which I realised that I was really careful about what products and ingredients I used on my face and body, but that I couldn’t find comparable haircare. When you consider that the absorption rate of your scalp is around four times greater than that of your forearms, it’s crazy to think what toxins you’re exposing yourself to through your haircare. So I produced a collection of high performance, biotech products that are free of toxins and up to 97% natural.

Our haircare collection works to encourage healthy hair growth, and create lightweight bounce, silky softness, high volume and frizz-free hair, thanks to the infusion of powerful extracts native to Ireland including kelp seaweed, carrageen moss, red clover, whiskey and hops. We champion plastic-free packaging, using aluminium and glass to help prevent further plastic pollution entering our environment.

How does hair change in menopause and midlife?

Hair density decreases with age, so as your oestrogen falls during perimenopause and menopause, your hair follicles can shrink and hair that grows will be much finer that previously. It can also cause a prolonged ‘shedding phase’ so you experience more hair fall and less hair growth. Combined, this can leave hair feeling and looking very flat and thin. Additionally, the hormonal changes can leave hair looking more frizzy and feeling dry.

What products would you recommend to a customer experiencing common symptoms like hair loss, reduction in volume and moisture?

Taking care of hair in menopause and midlife can require more hydrating hair care actives and thickening shampoos and conditioners to combat thinner hair, combined with targeted hair growth treatments such as our Advanced Scalp Serum. I would strongly advise using products with natural ingredients that don’t strip out the good oils from the hair, while incorporating smoothing and conditioning extracts such as organ oil, hazelnut oil and coconut oil. Avoid silicone-based products as these can cause product build up, prevent moisture from penetrating the hair shaft and encourage poor scalp health.

Do you have any top tips or tricks to help promote a healthy-looking head of hair?

Scalp health is so important for a healthy-looking head of hair, so when you’re washing your hair, always stimulate the scalp by massaging with your fingers. You can do this on dry hair a second time a day to encourage healthy hair growth. Additionally, don’t wash your hair too often. Over-washing can lead to a dry scalp and greasy hair so generally, shampooing every 2-3 days will support a healthy head of hair.

How can women feel more hair-confident?

Hair loss and thinning can really impact a person’s confidence and while there are lots of products and methods available to encourage hair growth and give the appearance of thicker, fuller hair, it is important to remember that you will notice any changes in your hair much more than others will. Feeling beauty confidence from within will make you look and feel better on the outside regardless of what hormonal changes you’re experiencing. So if you want to improve the outward look of your hair, definitely use the products available to help, but don’t let your hair define your overall confidence as you are worth so much more than just your hair.

We sat down with the FreshWipes team find out a little more about this groundbreaking brand, which has quickly established itself as a firm favourite for QVC customers…

Our story began in January 2020 when our founder Liz Barnes (a medical rep, specialising in antiseptic solutions for hospitals) recognised the critical importance of pre-operative skin cleansing to minimise post-surgical infections. Surprisingly, the majority of surgical infections originate from the bacteria on the patient’s own skin, and these same bacteria that colonise our bodies, also contributes to body odour.

Intrigued by the obvious need for a widely-available product, which could effectively reduce bacteria levels on the skin, eliminate unwanted odours, and evoke a refreshing sensation, FreshWipes came into existence. Our biodegradable body wipes serve as the perfect companion for those challenging moments in life when access to a shower seems impossible or impractical, enabling you to regain confidence, independence, and a revitalizing freshness effortlessly.

Available in a choice of scents, and with each wipe being extra-moist, it’s possible to give yourself a full body cleanse without the need for a shower or bath.

Who benefits from FreshWipes?

Our customer base includes individuals with physical disabilities, limited mobility, and various special needs that hinder regular bathing or showering routines. The overwhelming feedback we receive from these customers is nothing short of amazing; they consider our wipes an absolute godsend.

Among our loyal supporters, we proudly count international disabled GB adaptive athletes, dedicated caregivers, a revered World War II veteran, nature enthusiasts who revel in camping adventures, resilient HGV drivers, post-operative and bedridden individuals, menopausal women grappling with hot flushes, and elderly or disabled individuals awaiting the installation of a new wet-room or bathroom.

The FreshWipes experience resonates with people from all walks of life, including sports enthusiasts seeking reliable hygiene solutions.

How do FreshWipes combat body odour?

Our advanced formula harnesses the power of antibacterial ingredients, prominently featuring Chlorhexidine, which rapidly eradicates bacteria and protein elements present in sweat that contribute to unpleasant odours. Consequently, our wipes effortlessly leave you feeling invigoratingly clean, as if you’ve just stepped out of a refreshing shower, even if days have passed without one.

What sets FreshWipes apart in terms of environmental responsibility?

We hold a profound commitment to the planet’s well-being, which is why our adult wipes are proudly biodegradable and free from plastic. Crafted from viscose, a luxurious cellulose material derived from sustainable wood pulp, each wipe boasts a remarkable softness and thickness. Furthermore, when disposed of in soil or compost, wipes begin to decompose within 30-45 days.

Why are FreshWipes a game-changer for menopause?

Menopause and perimenopause can be complex periods in a woman’s life, marked by irregular periods and eventually stopping altogether.

During these unpredictable times, unexpected bleeding can pose challenges. FreshWipes Intimates provide an ideal personal cleansing solution, ensuring a quick refresh and eliminating any concerns regarding unwanted odours. Dermatologically tested and pH balanced, these fragrance-free wipes are specifically designed for the delicate skin in intimate areas, offering unparalleled comfort and peace of mind.

Hot flushes can be particularly troublesome, as immediate access to a shower may not always be feasible, intensifying concerns about body odour. Fear not, for FreshWipes Body Wipes come to the rescue! Conveniently storable in bags, lockers, or desks, they empower you to effortlessly freshen up throughout your day, wherever it may take you.

Pro tip: for an instant, revitalizing cool-down during a hot flush, store a wipe in the fridge and gently place it on the back of your neck. The refreshing sensation will be a welcomed relief in such moments.

Menopause can often be a time when we are not only struggling with our own bodies but also oftentimes trying to care for elderly parents too. FreshWipes shampoo caps are the perfect solution for hair washing if showering is prevented due to ill-health, surgery or disability. The cap is simply placed on the head, the hair tucked inside and massaged through the cap for 3 minutes. Towel dry the hair after to remove the dirt, grease and odour and voila’ clean, fresh hair without water!

Life Armour came about when I started my own perimenopausal journey. I was working full-time, had two children, and was generally feeling run down and stressed out. But as I shopped around for some sort of supplement to support my emotional and physical wellbeing, I became more and more confused. I was conscious that I needed to better manage stressful times, prioritise my sleep and support my energy – but couldn’t find what I needed.

While I started out looking for something to help myself, I quickly realised I could really help women like me. There are so many supplements on the market, yet few offer real quality ingredients and are often diluted by things our bodies just don’t need. With the support of amazing friends, family members and a trusted group of experts I set out to design a range of products that contained only what the body needed and nothing it didn’t.

I had spent my career developing skincare products for well-known brands so creating supplements was a completely new challenge. But I was passionate about developing something of real quality, free from bulking agents and fillers.

A different kind of supplement brand

The aim of the products is to help people stress less, get better rest, and feel more energised. Stress can impact us in so many ways and prolonged periods of sleeplessness and anxiety can be seriously detrimental to our long-term health. There is also increased evidence to suggest that heightened stress during perimenopause and menopause can make this period of change much harder to manage, so it’s important to manage this as best you can.

Life Armour products are a collaboration between a community of women and experts such as nutritionists and GPs. Since being launched, the Life Armour range has won multiple awards and has a growing fan base.

Our customer’s needs

Life Armour products have found a home among a large community of women who are perimenopausal and menopausal. The feedback has been so positive, and our customers have been so loyal, it’s really helped to grow the brand and refine our belief that natural, targeted ingredients are best.

Drops of Slumber+ and Drops of Balance have also been popular with parents looking to support their teenagers with things like exam anxiety, school stress and so on.

People who buy our liquid supplements are looking to support their mental and emotional well-being.

The importance of bio-availability

Bio-availability is all about how well the body can absorb and use a substance. It’s an essential part of the Life Armour ethos as the quicker a supplement is absorbed, the more effective it’s going to be. Hence our preference for liquid supplements as the body will absorb a liquid much faster than a pill or tablet. Just one pipette of Drops of Slumber contains all the right ingredients for a restful night and is free of harmful chemicals.

So many supplements are riddled with agents and fillers that our bodies have absolutely no need for. That’s why our range of products are so unique. They are completely natural and formulated with the purest and highest quality ingredients such as Montmorency Cherry, Chamomile and Ashwagandha.

Our range of products are also vegan-friendly, so you know you’re getting all the good stuff!

I can tell you the precise moment I began ‘the change’. It was on the afternoon of 27 November 2020 at 2.50pm. That was the moment that I watched my husband take his very last breath. He was just 50 years old and I was 49. That was the moment I became a widow and the single mum to our two daughters.

Initially the change in my body came in the form of a bizarre sense of strength. I was so focused on being strong and showing the girls that ‘everything is going to be OK’. I clearly remember standing behind the podium at the crematorium in front of the small lock-down congregation saying goodbye to Jeremy, the love of my entire life – my best friend for the past 30 years – without shedding one single tear. I don’t even recognise that woman now.

Where did she find the strength?

I’d always been a fairly level headed woman, a capable juggler (admittedly dropping the occasional ball), outwardly confident, a self-proclaimed control freak and, thanks in part to Jeremy’s zest for life, I tended to be a positive, bubbly person. Jeremy had been sick with a blood cancer, called multiple myeloma, for two years by the time he died. It’s an incurable cancer, so we knew the end was going to come way too soon. It was a rollercoaster couple of years, but we’d both always been so strong and positive.

Now he was gone was not the time to fall apart. I was determined to show our girls that multiple myeloma was not going to kill us too. In the 18 months that followed I threw myself into fund raising; I ran a half marathon; I renovated a house and we moved home; I finally organised a proper farewell to Jeremy holding a fantastic ‘celebration of life’ and I and the girls took our first holiday as a family of three. All this while being mum (and dad) to our girls as they navigated the changes of teenage life while grieving for their daddy.

And then it finally hit me. Bam! I was utterly exhausted. My zest for life was gone. I looked haggard and tired. My resilience was depleted and it took the most minor thing to push me over the edge and into a sea of tears. I felt I was hanging on to life by my fingertips and my heart ached. The searing pain when I finally stopped trying to prove that ‘everything was going to be OK’ was excruciating. It wasn’t OK. It was far from OK.

In my darkest of days I just wanted to stop the world so I could get off it and be with Jeremy. I didn’t have the strength or the desire to carry on living any longer. The once confident me, was now thwart with anxiety. I couldn’t make any more decisions on my own. I’d panic at the slightest issue, catastrophising it.

At night I’d fall asleep thinking of Jeremy and there he was still forefront of my mind when I woke, increasingly in the early hours of the night. The lack of sleep was taking its toll. I began to snap unjustifiably at my adorable girls. Their bubbly, positive mum was disappearing.

Dragging myself out of bed some days felt a massive challenge. The thought of filling yet another long and meaningless day felt daunting. I was empty. I was lost and alone without my husband. This is what full-blown grief looks like. It’s ugly. It’s dark.

And then I started to forget things. Forget appointments; forget names that should normally be on the tip of my tongue. I even got lost driving into my local town. Was this what they call ‘widow brain’? Was grief taking over my body? I was so overwhelmed by my grief – controlled by it.

Surely I should be getting better after two years, not worse? By now 51 years old, my periods had been getting progressively lighter and irregular.

And then the sweats. Thank the Lord for the sweats. I say ‘thank you’ because the furnace that increasingly engulfed my body was the first physical symptom that told me that I was hurtling my way towards the menopause. It was a light bulb moment. Perhaps many of the symptoms I had been attributing to grief were, in part, menopausal?

Cat Amour, also known as the ‘Hormone Fairy’, is a certified menopause health coach offering a natural approach to peri and post-menopause symptoms. Not only does she work with a lot of widows, but she is also a widow herself.

Cat measures levels of hormones in her clients’ bodies using the DUTCH method – a dried urine test to measure hormones and hormone metabolites, which access hormone production and breakdown.

“Not surprisingly, widows tend to have extraordinarily high levels of cortisol – the stress hormone,” says Cat. “Not only are they coming to terms with the trauma of losing their life partner but also they suddenly have to make massive life-changing decisions and navigate a new life without their soulmate.

You’re running on adrenaline and cortisol. You’re probably not eating properly, sleeping well, looking after yourself and the eventual symptoms are severe fatigue, panic attacks, anxiety, low moods, brain fog – even hot flashes can be down to cortisol.

These symptoms are so similar to those experienced when levels of oestrogen and progesterone naturally start to fall – which is what happens in the peri menopause. So, when grief and peri menopause collide, the emotions and symptoms are exacerbated. You’re hit with a double whammy and it’s so hard to tell what is grief and what is the perimenopause.

When this happens, it’s even more important to look after yourself and nourish your body. For most widows, cortisol can be the primary culprit, so it’s vital we address this first as well as look to balance your other hormones. It can be a more complicated and emotionally tough process.”

The timings seem somewhat cruel. Losing Jeremy meant I was confronted with an involuntary change to my lifestyle; a vicious change to my dreams; a sobering change of perspectives and now, the inevitable, natural change in my body, all at once.

It’s a fine line that I continue straddle, but, drawing strength from the love that I will always have for my gorgeous husband, I do so knowing that I will get through this change and eventually I will create a new life worth living (for him) and me.

We’re thrilled to have launched Pause Well-Aging Skincare at QVC, a concise, curated edit of skincare developed specifically for perimenopausal, menopausal and post-menopausal complexions. Founder Rochelle Weitzner has shared her story with us, along with all the details on her incredible luxurious and efficacious range.

Rochelle, can you tell us about your brand ethos and the origins of Pause?

I was inspired to launch Pause Well-Aging after experiencing my first hot flush. Following many years as the executive running top beauty brands, as I looked for solutions, I was shocked to discover that most products geared for ‘women my age’ either seemed rooted in the 1950s, offered little to no information to assure me that hot flushes and changing skin were a normal part of this life stage, or quite frankly, didn’t exist at all.

Pause launched in 2019 as the first menopause-centric skincare brand. Why skincare? Because the quality of our skin is critically important to our self-esteem, especially at this time in our lives.

Our mission is to defy ageist stereotypes while addressing the specific needs of menopausal skin – from the outside in, and the inside out. To date, this holistic approach to skincare has empowered thousands of women to celebrate their strength and beauty and confidently embrace the next chapter of their lives.

Talk us through the Pause Complex.

Our Proprietary Pause Complex is a fusion of six vitamins, antioxidants and peptides that powers every single product formula in our line. It is designed to help more experienced skin look firmer, brighter, tighter, and deeply hydrated – working in combination with carefully chosen ingredients in each of our products to deliver benefits specific to menopausal skin.

How can customers slot your products into their everyday beauty routine?

I believe skincare routines should be simple and pleasurable which makes them easier to stick to. This is why I created fewer products that do more. A great moisturiser is the foundation of any menopausal skincare routine. Our Collagen Boosting Moisturizer can be used day and night to keep skin consistently hydrated.

We suggest pairing the moisturiser with our Fascia Stimulating Tool for five minutes a day, massaging your face and neck using our Pause Method. The moisturiser allows the tool to more easily slip and glide across the skin, and the tool allows the moisturiser to better absorb into skin for greater benefit.

The Detox Serum should be added to your routine twice daily before applying the moisturiser (serums should always come first) if you’re looking for skin to be clearer, brighter, or more even. I created the Pause Detox Serum because I was suffering terribly from perimenopausal breakouts. I needed a product that would be powerful enough to clear out pores, exfoliate my skin, and promote skin cell turnover, but also be gentle and hydrating enough for daily use. The serum is the perfect product with fruit-derived enzymes that work as AHAs to exfoliate and soften skin while willow bark extract, a natural form of salicylic acid, is very soothing and can assist in skin cell turnover.

Our Cooling Mist can be used anytime when one of life’s hot moments happen: hot flushes, night sweats, hot summer days, post-workout cooldowns, or anytime there is a feeling of general overheating. It works instantly, lasts up to an hour, and is handbag friendly; I never leave home without it.

Tell us about your Fascia Stimulating Tool.

Hormonal changes in menopause can cause skin sagging, dullness, loss of texture and dryness. Reduced levels of oestrogen lead to dramatic collagen loss which can accelerate skin ageing. The tool was engineered to help stimulate fibroblasts – collagen-producing cells within the fascia connective tissue.

This novel approach to skincare was based on scientific research that suggests external skin stimulation can reach beyond the surface to the subdermal level. Using the tool daily may improve blood flow, support cell turnover, encourage lymphatic drainage, boost collagen production, and optimise overall skin nutrition – which can help reduce sagging and enhance volume and elasticity for skin that looks tighter, toned, and more radiant.

If you had to choose, what would you say is your favourite product from your range?

That’s a tough question! I obviously love all my products since each was created to address a personal need I was experiencing at the time. That said, I recommend the Collagen Boosting Moisturizer to everyone because it’s so critically important for menopausal skin to remain hydrated and this product is a lightweight, easily absorbed, hydrating powerhouse. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the Fascia Stimulating Tool because these two products were designed to work together to address neck, jawline and facial sagging, which is one of the top concerns I had heading into menopause. Daily facial massage with the Fascia Stimulating Tool has improved the appearance of these areas for me so having my moisturiser and tool close by at all times is really critical.

Protecting your skin against harmful UVA and UVB rays is essential, but SPF comes with its own host of questions. We’ve teamed up with the experts at Ultrasun to answer some common SPF queries.

I’m not going on holiday this year, why do I need SPF?

We hear “should you wear SPF everyday?” a lot. The answer is simple: yes! Whether you’re heading for sunnier climates or just chilling in the garden, SPF needs to be a part of your daily routine.

UVA rays are a year-round skin damager, penetrating cloud and glass and impacting cumulatively beneath the skin’s surface. Think UV “A” for ageing. 365-day UVA protection is particularly important for those looking to prevent and control existing pigmentation.

Even if you’re just going for a stroll around the local park, your skin is still being exposed to harmful rays. Plus, with sun exposure linked to the appearance of ageing skin, SPF is a great tool in your anti-ageing arsenal to help maintain a more youthful-looking complexion.

A good UV protection product now multi-tasks, delivering a lightweight, under make-up formula while also giving anti-ageing, anti-pollution, skin radiance and smoothing benefits, alongside the crucial high SPF and UVA filter as standard.

We love Ultrasun‘s Face Essentials Trio, which boasts three SPF formulas specially designed for your face. Each one goes brilliantly under make-up as they’re super lightweight and sink into the skin quickly, while helping to keep your complexion moisturised. With classic Face SPF 30, a tinted version and a handy Face Mist SPF 50, there’s a formula to cover your skin whatever you’re up to, plus each one is a really quick step to tack onto the end of your morning routine. It’s facial protection without the fuss!

Another area of your face you shouldn’t neglect is your delicate eye area, which is not only prone to fine lines and wrinkles, but can just as easily get damaged by harsh UV rays. Choose a formula that’s designed to treat it, like Ultrasun‘s Eye Cream SPF 30. As well as delivering excellent sun protection, it works to reduce the look of wrinkles around your eyes, giving you instant, long-lasting results.

What can I do about pigmentation?

From prevention to how to get rid of pigmentation, uneven and patchy skin tone is a big concern. Once you learn what causes pigmentation, the solution seems simple.

UV rays are chief instigators when it comes to uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation as it sends the melanin-producing cells, melanocytes, into a production overdrive that causes a patchy, uneven, blemished skin tone.

Using SPF daily is your best defense when it comes to prevention, but how can you help existing pigmentation? Ultrasun has you covered. The Anti-Pigmentation Face SPF 50+ is formulated to help improve the look of the visible signs of ageing, including pigmentation, and features a blend of skin-loving ingredients such as hexylresorcinol and Ecotin. What’s more, this one comes in an amazing supersize, so you can stay stocked up for longer!

Ultrasun’s biggest pigmentation tip? Be careful with your fragrance!

Sprayed directly onto skin, perfume is so aggressive that it undermines the skin’s ability to protect itself against UV damage. Perfume-covered skin becomes more vulnerable to sun damage. That means the level of protection you get from your sunscreen is diminished. That’s why you often see women with speckled pigmentation patches on their necks and chest.

What do I do about sunbathing?

If the sun is shining, it’s fair to say that many of us will want to be outside, and a lot of us probably haven’t protected our skin well in past pursuits of a tan. Luckily, Ultrasun has a range of formulas, including Tan Activators for your face and body, that’ll help to keep you protected while you enjoy the warmer weather. If you’re keen to promote a gorgeous summer glow, don’t compromise on sun protection and instead opt for formulas like Ultrasun‘s Pre-Sun Tan Activator and After Sun Tan Booster, which will work to enhance your natural tan without prolonged sun exposure. Paired with SPF, you’re ready to head out into the sun. Here are some important tips to remember:

It’s all in the application

Application is key. Apply liberally to all exposed, or potentially exposed parts of the body. The official guidelines state one teaspoon worth for the face. As a rule of thumb, use a teaspoon of sunscreen for each arm, leg, front, back and face including neck and ears.”

Know your skin and your formula

“Choose the right protection level for you, where you are and the temperature. Know the formula you’ve chosen, read the application instructions and, if advised, reapply as required, for example after swimming, perspiring or if you’ve rubbed it off.”

Protect more vulnerable areas

“For women it’s more likely on the shins and feet. The most common site for men to develop a malignant melanoma is on the chest, back and scalp. Lips are often forgotten and with no natural shade like the lower lip, the upper lip area in particular shows ageing from sun damage quicker.”

To ensure you’re covered from top to toe in stellar SPF formulas, why not check out Ultrasun‘s six-piece Discovery Collection? Boasting two formulas for the body, face and lips, every inch of your skin can be covered, so all you have to do is step out into the sun and enjoy.

Stay protected this season and check out the rest of the Ultrasun range here.
